TFing your Pets!

How many of you TF ( traditionally feed ) your pets?

My roomate's cat is overweight, and sick and may have a thyroid issue.
I cringe everytime they feed the animals the "cat chow".

How would you traditionally feed a cat? a dog?

What about chickens?

They just got some baby chics, i was thinking of sneeking some stuff in.

i don't have any pets right now but you're mostly referring to a BARF(Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet, i think. cats for example, are almost strictly carnivorous so would be on an all-animal product diet (raw meat with bones, cod liver oil, etc.) dogs are more omnivorous and can eat some vegetable matter and stuff along with raw meat. if you google BARF diet you would probably come up with a lot of info on it, including some specifics.

Our first hamster, Samster was fed TF human leftovers- but he didn't live very long and I'm not convinced it was a particularly healthy diet for a hamster. Hamsters aren't people.

Our 2nd hamster, Buro, and our current hamster, Silky, are fed "hamster food" from the pet store, supplemented with fresh raw veggies. The "hamster food" is basically a raw seed and nut mixture in a good mixture to be balanced diet for a hamster. I didn't select a brand with artificial colors and processed "cakes" mixed in with the seeds and nuts.

When going for TF for a pet, make sure it's biologically appropriate for that particular species, rather than table scraps from TF for humans.

We started feeding our cats biologically appropriate about 3 years ago, and will never ever go back! They are so healthy and have the most incredible coats. They also started to act differently...almost more 'catlike'...after the switch! We could never quite describe it.
For now, I order their food from hare-today.com. I get them ground chicken w/ bones and organs, ground rabbit w/ bones and organs, and occasionally a little ground salmon w/ bones. They love the rabbit the best! And every now and then I get them chicken wings so they can crunch the bones up and give their teeth and jaws a good workout. They also get raw egg yolk sometimes, or just a bit of celtic sea salt sprinkled on their food.
Someday when we get our farm, I'll be raising some chickens FOR pet food, and grinding them myself, to save a bit of money. Though it's not too bad right now. For three cats, I probably spend $50 a month on their food, and that's including shipping.

we first started with the Dr. Pitcairn book and it has morphed into raw meat scraps, etc for our (pregnant, now) cat. we raise chickens and have a lot of raw meat, bones, scraps and organs. also, sometimes raw milk/ cream and sometimes eggs. she is very healthy and the first cat we are not allergic to.

Ours get a little raw milk/cream as well. Last weekend our midwife came over for an in home visit and she's quite allergic to cats...she was amazed that she never got the least bit sensitive the 2.5 hours she was here! We have had that experience before with other friends too, and I'd never really put it together that it might be their diet. Cool!
Tabitha...hi btw! Recognize you (and your kids' names) from the family cow board! (It's Rayelle!)
