Since becoming a midwife student, many people have asked me for advice. When my sister became pregnant last year she asked me if it was ok to eat deli meat, shellfish, etc. She was deadset against breastfeeding. Recently she's been asking me about vaccinations.
I give her my OPINION which is based on what I have been reading/studying and on my personal lifestyle choices. I would share with her the benefits of breastfeeding but she would debate me...saying it was "gross" or that formula is a good second choice and lots of her friends do it.....and their babies are just fine. When I told her that she has the choice whether to vax or not or even to delay it, she said, "Well there are studies on both sides of the fence so I'm just going to do what my doctor says."
My friend with Factor V said that she is scheduled for a repeat C-section on April 17th. When I asked why (clotting condition coupled with major surgery raised a flag in my head) she said, "Because (first daughter) was a c-section and my doctor just said it would be best." Um....best for whom?
Anyway, it seems like now that I'm a midwife student, people are asking for my opinion about their pregnancies and babies all the time...yet I'm not sure why. The women that ask my opinion are just doing whatever their doctors tell them to do....even if it's not the best course of action nor best for them or the baby.
So...my question: Do you ever just feel like saying, "Just go ask your doctor." I mean, I'm all for changing the way that people view birth and promoting a natural experience but I feel like I'm wasting my breath! After asking about the birth process, my sister added, ".....and don't try scaring me into having a natural birth with all your midwife talk." Why is natural birth so scary? Hmmmm......
Thanks for any info ladies!
