To the mamas who felt their babies came out with no need to push:
Did you do anything prenatally that you attribute to this?
I was religious about my squats and prenatal yoga, and the week before I was due I saw a chiro who specializes in prenatal adjustments, he adjusted my pelvis for optimum birthing.
I think those things helped immensely! (I say my boy birthed himself, and I was along for the ride, he just barreled his way out!)

The one time that my baby birthed without any pushing from me... it mostly had to do with the fact that my midwife let me get to that point where my body took over. I didn't do anything different from the others prenatally (in fact I probably did worse! No chiro, no special exercise, etc... and I wasn't eating as well as I normally do either.) Go figure!

The one child that was the hardest to push out I did EVERYTHING "right" with that pregnancy! I saw a chiropractor, took Bradley courses and practiced my exercises and relaxation every night, ate a "perfect" diet, etc...

i didn't do anything special. if anything, i did "less" of the "right" things, as it was my second pregnancy and i was busy with my toddler!

Me! With my second baby, I did not push at all, and breathed the baby down! I tell people that and they look at me funny, so I was glad to see this question!

My first baby was posterior, and I pushed for an hour or so, and it was the hardest part of my labor. In fact, I don't remember much about that hour. During my second pregnancy, I took a Hypnobirthing class with a wonderful woman friend. I didn't start until close to the birth, actually just maybe a month before. I have to admit that I did not practice that much. She came to our home, and those sessions were very helpful. One of the most helpful things was when she explained to me the concept of not pushing. I had never heard this before! She suggested practicing while having a bowel movement, don't strain, practice breathing it out! Sounds crazy, but I am really glad I did that (I only did it once or twice, but it really helped me to understand the sensation and the process!!). Then when the time came, I really did not push at all, and it was so amazing. I truly felt each part of my baby's body as he came out and was born!

I highly recommend doing a class with a private instructor if you decide to check out Hypnobirthing. It made my second birth a very different experience!

I've been wondering if there's a similarity between not pushing while poopin' and also birthing....thank you for your insight!

I HAD to push. It was as involuntary as breathing.

My body just contracted and pushed the baby out on its own every single time. I don't "push" at all. My body does. And nothing I could do can stop it.

During my first birth, I think I was surprised by how much I felt it "there", so to speak, almost like you were pushing to have a bowel movement. I remember thinking, "nobody told me it was like this!" Maybe I felt it more that way because he was posterior.

But in my second birth, I really did not push, and in neither birth did I feel a need to push. I think it is so individual, for different people and different births. My second birth happened much more quickly. The baby's head was right there before the midwife had even examined me, and he was born within the next three waves or so. It was such a different experience not pushing.

hypnobirthing

I am going to try this as well. I am also reading the book and listening to the CD's as I could not afford the class even though I really feel it would help. I have been doing reading that when the baby is ready to come down, she will and that we don't have to start "pushing" just because we are at 10cm which is what they did with my last 3. I am so ready to do this differently than the last 3. Breathing down seems to be working with your body and breathing her down with relaxation in your mind and focus at the same time while realizing that the baby has an active part in this process not just us. I have only 2 weeks to go but I am off work officially as of today. I teach school and was not able to relax enough(sit) so I was swelling tremendously and have lots of pelvic pain. I have very little swelling now that I am home only chasing my own 3 year old. Keep reading the hypnobirthing. There are hospitials that use this primarily according to the book because of its success in reduction of C-section and meds and the happy moms and babies.

In addition to the breathing the baby down part of hypnobirthing, the visualizations and breathing and image suggestions on the tape and in the book were very helpful to me. Best to you!
