Me too. Well, Dd does some. Ds is rather whatever about them.

My kids are so eclectic in their musical tastes, and they come by it honestly. Dd just put "The Coasters" and Hinder's "Get Stoned" on both our MP3 players. The lyrics to "Get Stoned" are:

"Lets go home and get stoned
We could end up making love instead of misery
Go home and get stoned
Cause' the sex is so much better when you're mad at me"

Somehow, Avril Lavigne doesn't seem so scandalous.

I really value that I can come here and get good discussion and honesty. You moms rock!!
I do not want to censor. And at the same time I feel pretty sure that I should only listen to music that models what I want in the world (what I want to emulate). So......... did I feel like a crappy mom that my kids new every word to Girlfriend, yeah. Is the song fun and upbeat and difficult to listen to and stand still..... I mean you have to dance when that song comes on. I haven't seen the video. Didn't know she played both girls. And, honestly, she's just singing about what really happens in highschool (and sometimes with some immature adults )
So. Did I come to a conclusion? No. There is some Christian music that sounds cool and has okay lyrics......But, alot of it is very boring, sounds the same and I do not want to cram religion constantly either. I'm between a rock and a hard place. Superchick has some good songs and so does a guy band that starts with an "s" name escapes me.

I want cool music that has nice, sweet fairy tale words......... I know not the real world.....

Michelle, I don't have a lot of input to your OP, Ellie doesn't have an ipod (yet) or have very diverse musical tastes yet. Dh likes rap and some hip hop so our exposure is based on listening in the car.

I think music affected me as a kid. I relate to Ard and UUMom and allgirls because that was my generation of music. I listened to a lot of "Seasons in the Sun".... etc. and it did make me sad. I also loved Simon and Garkunkel (hence my senior name ) I also liked Queen, the Carpenters and Bread. My real awakening came with Barry Manilow Now that is music!

My mom also listened to all of the Rogers and Hammerstein's musicals, Judy Garland and lots of big band stuff. I think I got my love of "big" music from all of that... I like music that moves me, but in a positive way.

Sexual stuff, I don't even remember, I was not effected at all by that. But macabre type stuff I do remember:

I remember things like "I just died in your arms tonight," (Cutting Crew 1986) and thinking, "What, you DIED?? That's horrible!! But how can you write a song about it if you're dead??" Like I was too young to get the metephore (younger than 10 years old).

Also, when Elinor Rigby kept her face "in a jar by the door," I was freaking out, "HER FACE IS IN A JAR!!!!???? OH MY GOD!!!" (This was in the early 80's but it was on the radio A LOT at the time, maybe because John Lennon had died? I'm not sure why it was on the radio so often, like every day. I actually thought it was Elton John because I was too young to know who the Beatles were.)

we don't censor in our home-movies or music...but then, some of us cuss like sailors here so there ya go.

When I was little I didn't like the words to HalfBreed by Cher. That song made me squirm. Seasons in the Sun was a weird one, too. Or how about You Sexy Thing. Blech.

Nowadays I get offended by truly moronic lyrics...such as "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce. "I'll have another you in a minute, in fact, he'll be here in a minute baby"

Dear God.

Irreplacable is lame, but the Umbrella song takes the prie for me, ugh, you know the "ella ella" thing.
Relient K is a good Christian band, is not boring at all, i didn't even thought it was Christian for some songs i heard, they have titles like "Maybe is Maybeline" or "This week the trend" you should listen to it on youtube.

classical music/instrumental?

Well, you can always listen to mostly classical/instrumental like at our house.

Although we like Les Mis:
"bargain prices, up against a wall ..." (lovely ladies) and we explain, we don't edit.

We also listen to a lot of C/W around here and like older stuff--I tend to turn off very explicit words and songs about alcoholic consumption.

We also like musicals and show tunes, and even the Music Man has its moments. And we don't sing songs from some musicals.

the earliest song that i can remember was the one that went, two steps forward, two steps back we come together cause opposites attract. I saw the music video (it was like 90 something maybe 89) with the animated cat! I was in love... I don't have any negative associations. I do remember the first time i heard Elton john's one about "i wrote this song about you" there is nothing about the lyrics that I don't like but the music creeped me out. maybe it's written in a funny key or something. Also, the first time I heard lennons "Imagine" i fell in love, when I heard the perfect circle cover imagine as an adult I had to pull over and cry... I love that song, the cover is almost better. almost
I think that we are going to have many fights about music in my house, I don't do country, gangster rap, or teenie music. Just about anything thats stupid if there are redeeming qualities we will discuss..

This is probably controversial, but all my kids can sing the score of Rent. Hey, it's Broadway.

My 14 yr old also has rewritten I Feel Pretty (from West Side Story) . It is quite hilarious.

His version is much better-- that's a really dumb song.

Music lyrics dont mean jack to me. My 14 yo was listening to linkin park and limp bizkit with me when he was 6. Hes now into panic at the disco and songs like that. My 4 yo is addicted to all american rejects, chemical romance and the fray. He sings them 24/7. Hes singing now as I type this. I remember listening to madonna songs, we all know what her lyrics are like, and then songs like Push it, etc. Lyrics have always had meanings, we just need to explain to our kids that they are just songs to enjoy.

When I was about 9 or so, my favorite song was Run, Joey, Run. or as we called it "Daddy, Please Don't."

It's about a woman who gets pregnant by her boyfriend, her dad beats her up and then goes to shoot the boyfriend but she throws herself in front of her boyfriend and the dad shoots her by mistake. My friends and I would listen to that song for hours in her basement, dancing around, acting it out, falling on the ground at the end. We knew the lyrics, but they didn't make me go out and get pregnant or anything.
Quote:
Got in my car, and I drove like mad
'Til I reached Julie's place
She ran to me, with tear-filled eyes
And bruises on her face!

All at once I saw him there,
Sneaking up behind me (Woman's voice: Watch out!)
Then Julie yelled, "He's got a gun!"
And she stepped in front of me

Suddenly, a shot rang out
And I saw Julie falling!
I ran to her, I held her close
When I looked down, my hands were red
And here's the last words Julie said...

(Woman's voice)

Daddy please don't
It wasn't his fault
He means so much to me
Daddy please don't
We're gon...na get... mar...ried......
We also listened to a lot of Clancy Brothers at home. I remember singing along to Whiskey in the Jar, and Whiskey You're The Devil and sort of wondering if it was ok to like a song about Whiskey (I didn't have the same qualms about liking a song about a father killing his pregnant daughter, though.)

And yes, they did affect me, I still tend towards morose thoughts of death at times.

ETA-- I just looked up the Billy song and it says it came out in '74, and I was older than 4. lol Anyway, it used to worry me and make me upset.

I also just looked up Seasons in the Sun, and it was also from 1974. When I recall my childhood, those are the songs I remember and it makes me feel sad. I can't think of anything bad that happened to me personally in '74, but the words to these songs can still make me feel wonky and upset.
Those 2 songs are the first ones I remember from my childhood, too-- along with "Memories" (Streisand).

hmmm... I do know that when I was a kid there was no such thing as rap music. The music these days is much worse than it used to be. Singing the lyrics to an AC/DC song isn't even as bad as some of the stuff you hear nowadays. I still prefer that my children not listen to "Highway to Hell" or other such music but they also will not be allowed to listen to rap music.

Started movin' in it on a Tuesday at two
A-singin' do lolly, lolly shicky do, shicky do
Wednesday at three I called the phone company, singin':
"Hey baby, put a phone in for me"
Thursday at four he came a-knockin' at my door, singin':

"Hey, baby, I'm your telephone man
You just show me where you want it and I'll put it where I can
I can put it in the bedroom, I can put it in the hall
I can put it in the bathroom, I can hang it on the wall
You can have it with a buzz, you can have it with a ring
And if you really want it you can have a ding-a-ling
Because-a hey baby, I'm your telephone man"

Can you believe that? And then he says:

"Now when other fellas call ya tell 'em how it all began"

Well...can you imagine?

My heart began a-thumpin' and my mind began to fly
And I knew I wasn't dealin' with no ordinary guy
So while he was a-talking I was thinkin' up my plan
Then my fingers did the walkin' on the telephone man

Singin' hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Get it any way you can
Right? Ha ha ha, so...

I got it in the bedroom, and I got it in the hall
And I got it in the bathroom, and he hung it on the wall
I got it with a buzz, and I got it with a ring
And when he told me what my number was I got a ding-a-ling

A-singin' hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Just-a doin' my thing
My DH loves this song and remembers it from being a kid but told me he didn't realize what it meant till he was older.

In grade eight the song by Salt and Peppa "slide push it" was really popular also that song "boom boom boom lets go back to my room, so we can do it all night and I can make you feel right" I knew they were about sex.

My Dad was really into music and so we always had records on when I was a kid. My parents loved the Beatles and so did I, still do. A lot of their songs were controversial at the time. I don't thing I was effected in the negative by the music I listened too growing up. I would rather my DS listen to any kind of music over watching violent TV filled with advertising.

Have you ever listened to Ani DiFranco? www.righteousbabe.com IMO She is an incredible singer, songwriter, guitarist, poet.....
She has been making records since she was 18 and is now almost 40. She became a mama last year and is a HBer. I find her message to be so right on. Yes she drops an occasional *f*bomb, but her music is incredible and her message profound. My oldest DD is 14 and she has been listening and joining me at concerts since she was 2. It has been so fun evolving with her, as she began to understand more of the lyrics it opened up lots of important talks.
Everything from swearing, to politics, to abortion.
My 35th bday gift was a trip to a park in NYC with my mom and 3 DDs to see Ani live. Such a treat!
My 14y/o has quite a collection on her laptop, some inspired by me, some I really can't stand and ask that they not be played in the family mix.

I think communication is the key. I hope you and your DD can find some comfortable common ground.

kids dancing to candyman

Ha! This thread so fits a scenario I dealt with last year - my kids go to a really nice, small, quaint private school. For the end of the year every year the kids put on a show of singing and dancing. Contemporary music/classic rock is often featured. Fine, right? Well for last year the first song of the night was Christina Aguilera's Candyman!!!!!!!!

I couldn't believe it. I mean it was obviously selected by the students but wow...

"Sweet sugar candy man [whispered]
He's a one stop, gotcha hot, making all the panties drop
Sweet sugar candy man [whispered]
He's a one stop, got me hot, making my uh pop"

Yah. Nice song choice, eh??:

Yes, actually. I love that song and so does my Dd. I guess I can see how a school would be pretty twitchy about it though.
