Plastic matress cover that's not plastic?

We need some sort of waterproof cover for the futon that is our livingroom couch.

I really don't want to put a plastic cover on it (under the cloth outer cover). Anyone know if there are alternatives?

What about wool puddle pads? I have a couple of those that I keep on LO's bed just in case. I know they can be kind of pricey but I think I got the smallest ones available thru www.babyworks.com I am totally psyched about how well they work.

Do you think they'd work well and be pretty user-friendly on a couch? We use this futon as our couch and I'm trying to prevent the pad becoming ruined by an almost 10 year-old and almost 3 year-old and their neverending spills.

They make non plastic-y type of ones. Must be some sort of plastic in it but you would never know. We bought one for our bed when we first started co-sleeping with the baby. It was not inexpensive but it felt like a regular cloth mattress pad. It washed like a regular sheet. I found it online at a place like The Comfort Company or The Company Store or similar. My mind is a blank and I will try and look later when I get home.

I can surely relate to your problem. I just bought a slipcover for my 35yr old couch. I have washed it at least once a week since I got it. The wool works wonders for keeping the spills from soaking into the mattress or futon. They are machine washable so that part is simple. I guess it would depend on how quickly you would get the spills...but presumably you are laundering the futon cover often? So you could wash them all together and it is so much nicer than plastic

I'll definately look into that. When you first mentioned wool I groaned. We use wool diaper covers and while those are easy enough to take care of, I imagined myself trying to handwash a wool matress cover in our tiny sink.

If they are machine washable, I think that might just be our solution. I really don't want to bring any plastic into the house - we are purging!!!!

Thanks - I'll try checking those names and see if they have any without plastic.

Here is one of the couple they have at The Company Store.

we use a fabric called ProCare, under our sheets. It's some type of fabric backed with polypro... but it doesn't make the sound of plastic. Similar to PUL but withstands washing wonderfully. We also have a mattress pad with PUL, but it started to wick after 10+ washings and was a pain to wash and dry.

I have seriously considered putting it under a sofa cover, but Dh refuses to use sofa covers.

That looks great - it says 100% cotton top - I wonder what the backing is?

Oooh - I didn't think of a PUL-type material...
