How to soften scratchy wool?

Hi everyone. I am knitting up some mittens for DH out of some wool I had in my stash. It's handspun, pretty scratchy, has the occasional small bit of plant matter in it, etc. Is there some kind of wool wash or something I can use on the mittens to soften them up a bit? I don't think DH would mind them as they are (he wears a hat made out of the same stuff all the time) but they just seem like they'd be much more comfortable if they weren't quite so scratchy.
Thanks!

you can trying soaking it in conditioner (yarn=hair, lol), but there's only just so much you can do if the quality of the fiber isn't there.
