This seems like the most appropriate forum for this, since making cloth menstrual pads involves the same skill set as making diapers. I just wanted to let everyone know about a wonderful new charity called Goods 4 Girls.
Maybe you've seen the ads where Tampax and Always are talking about how girls in some areas of Africa are unable to go to school during their periods because they have no sanitary/dependable way to deal with their menstrual flow. These companies are donating disposable pads to help the girls get through school. Well, that's great, but there are some serious problems with disposable pads for these girls--for one, they can't afford them, and they aren't going to be able to afford them, so whenever Tampax and Always decide that the goodwill campaign has run its course, they're right back where they started. Just as seriously, though, most of these areas have no solid waste disposal systems, or at best an incinerator, which of course releases toxins into their immediate environment. With the additional factor of AIDS, this is a huge problem.
One woman stepped up to the challenge and has created Goods 4 Girls to allow us to make or buy cloth pads and give them to these girls..a dependable, long-term solution that allows the girls to go to school without costing the world or causing environmental problems. I think it's really fabulous--a chance to do concrete good for these girls, affordably.
