typically, the bones shift out during vaginal birth. they can and do go back together, and you might try belly binding (including the hips in the bind) as part of the process.
My body changed completely after giving birth to my DS. My hips were narrower (it took awhile for me to notice this though - about 5 months) and my ribs/chest was wider. I think things just shift around.
I wore size 8 jeans prepregnancy and now 2 years later am in size 10 due to larger hips, though I'm below my pre-pregnancy weight. It just happens that way I figure, things shift in pregnancy and birth. Might be part of the reason second births are easier too.
