Help Me Dye DS's Hair!

For Ry's birthday I said he could get a few streaks. We bought some "Tripped Up Turquoise" by Color Jamz but after talking to some other moms I'm thinking it won't show unless I bleach it first. I'd REALLY rather not do that.

Are there any dyes out there that come in colors (blue, green) and are made for darker hair? He has brown hair.

Punky color or manic panic are usually pretty bold, but show up best on lighter or bleached hair. I assume you don't want to do that so I'd just go ahead and do it as is.

Color Rays/Expressions (I think?) was a brand that allows for some vivid colors on dark hair. Have fun!

Manic Panic should work, red and pink show up really well even in darker hair...I don't know about turquoise....just one word of advice....

do NOT use Kool-Aid or food coloring! The manic panic will eventually fade away but Kool-Aid and food coloring won't wash out, you have to wait until it grows out (I knew someone who's daughter dyed her hair orange with Kool-Aid and it never came out:....)

yeah - koolair id very permanant. my youngest has just finished groowing out her hot pink hair after 2 years. she is 5. it did fader though. people kept asking if it was her natrual color : yeah .. hot pink fruit punch is a natrual hair color for little scandinavian girls everywhere. I shuold say her hair was very light. on my older dds and neices it didn't even hardly show up.

My babysitter got something at hot topic that showed up on dd's hair but I think her coloring was still pretty light then. . . it smelled like blueberries . . . .

otherwise we have had to bleech before dying. on the up side it wasn't that big of a deal. it was just something permanant that had to grow out op ver the course of a couple of years. since your ds is a boy that shouldn't be such a big deal. our compromise in the past when they have had long hair was to just do the tips/ends. it makes for a really nice dramatic flash of color without getting near their skin, scalp or eyes and can be easily trimmed out when they grow tired of it or if it is a total disaster. they usually did it a few weeks before they were planning to get a hair cut. its kinda a spring tradition around here. . . .

My daughter and son have light hair, so getting dye to show on them is usually no problem. However, this last batch, we used Raw from Hot Topic and it was REALLY strong -- not chemical-ly, it actually smelled like merlot going on -- but it took in a very bright and vibrant way. I think it may actually work on a darker haired child. It worked on my shower tile and everything else it touched, that's for sure, and I had it professionally taken out of my hair after a few weeks.

The Raw line has a whole range of colors and they're very gentle on the hair.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find that!
