We have a number of wooden boxes dh put together last year for sfg and patio planter purposes.

He used half-inch plywood, because that's what he was able to get for free, and metal braces at the corners. The boxes are one foot deep. We have pea gravel around the outside of the boxes to a 4-6 inch depth- figuring that that the weight will help keep them together and compensate for the thinner lumber. So far, that seems to be working.

A couple of the boxes have soil leaking out at one corner. Probably, he should have lined the walls on the inside with plastic or something before putting the soil in...but he didn't and I wasn't there to suggest it (he did this for me as a birthday present while I was out of town.)

Is there anything anyone can suggest to caulk or fill the joins of the boxes to prevent more erosion?

If I have to, I'll try to shift the soil and staple thick plastic to the boxes on the inside....but besides this being inconvenient, I fear that if I start on this project dh will interpret this as a criticism of his work and never make anything for me ever again
