my raw butter arrived..but! its wrapped in plastic cling wrap!

i was so looking forward to getting my raw butter, organic and from the farm. but they have wrapped each one in plastic clingfilm wrap (i think in usa its called saran wrap?) anyway i'm sure i read somewhere that using this stuff for anything that contains fat is the worst thing to do because it absorbs all the chemicals. this butter wasn't cheap and i can't waste it, i will state next time i order that i don't want it wrapped in this stuff. but should i be really worried?

I can't answer your question unfortunately. Our butter comes in a plastic tub and I am not happy with it. Plastic and food don't go together IMHO. I make sure that I go to the store the moment the milk, butter & cream is delivered. Then I rush home and put all of it in glass containers. The butter lasts twice as long in the glass and the cream and milk is much tastier our of the glass bottles. Makes you wonder... If I could avoid it completely, I would never use plastic or allow it to touch my food.

Could you ask the farmer to use wax paper instead?

devils advocate here, i really think there are bigger fish to fry than your butter being wrapped in saran wrap. food grade plastic containers are generally much less likely to leach any chemicals of bpa's than regular plastic, just as an fyi. i get my milk in glass and appreciate it but i would love to have access to raw butter and right now i dont, so be grateful you can get raw butter, and transfer it to a nice glass butter container when you bring it home!

My mom once told me to scrape off the outer edge (not very much--just a little would be fine) of block cheese that had been wrapped in plastic. I would think that's where the majority of any leaching would be found. I assume that you could do that with your butter if you are concerned and it wouldn't be overly wasteful.

Yes, that's exactly what I would do too.

I'd transfer it to a glass or ceramic container, and let the farm know that next time you'd prefer yours wrapped in something else (like wax paper).

All in all, I think that the benefits of raw butter outweigh the dangers of short term plastic exposure. I'd go ahead and use the butter, and maybe not even bother scraping anything off the edges.

Our raw butter comes in a food saver type of bag, and our raw cheddar is wrapped in clingwrap. I wish that wasn't the case, but it is. My co-op also sells mozzerella that is wrapped in cling wrap.

FWIW, I think some cling wraps are supposedly safer than others. I think the greenguide or one of those has info on that. I'm not sure what brand ours is wrapped with. When I can I cut off the outermost portion of the cheese as the PPs said.

we wrap ours in wax paper, or parchment paper, whatever we happen to have at the time. And, FWIW, it is a lot of extra work to do something different for one person. we do it, because we like to keep our customers happy, but it does make things take longer. If it was me, I would just rewrap it when I got home, or put it in a glass storage container. I would not make a huge fuss over it. JMO.

From what I've read, the "wax" paper of today is usually a plastic coating on there. Someone even mentioned recently that this is now true of butcher paper too.

I use ziplocks when I'm in a pinch and pre-wrap the cheese or whatever in an unbleached coffee filter or parchment (which has a silicone coating, but I'm okay with that personally). That doesn't really help in terms of how it arrives to you, but maybe it is an option for once you get it home.
