What do you plant in your cold frame?

DH finally got to his project list last weekend and made me the cold frame I have been wanting, but now I need to do something with it. I have no idea what to put in there (other than lettuce) or how to use it. I'm in zone 5 and I still have about a foot of snow on the ground, so I have a bit to figure out a game plan.

Should I put weed paper under the soil or just fill it up and not worry about it?

I'm in zone 8, so I'm not sure what to do with the snow...We use an old bubble skylight as a coldframe over raised beds. I planted snow peas, radishes, lettuce & chard about four weeks ago & have nice strong seedlings. Then I uncovered that bed and moved it to another to plant spinach, beets, and a fancy red lettuce. I would check with your local cooperative extension to ask about planting times and such. I would think at least snow peas would be a safe bet this time of year, but again I'd check with the big dogs!
