A happy observation

I rode a university campus bus yesterday. A mom and her two kids came on board. I think they were about 2 and 5 years old. It seemed to me that the college students were noticing her and her family simply because they are not used to seeing kids on the bus. The 2 year-old started to fuss and the mom starting nursing her. I thought this was brave especially in this circumstance of being under more than the usual scrutiny.

What was most interesting is that I looked around for people’s reactions (at the same time I was grinning ear-to-ear). Three or four people were watching her but they just seemed very curious. Maybe these young adults just don’t know enough about children to have made any judgements about breastfeeding an older child. They don’t have pre-conceived notions. Or maybe they are just more open to “alternative” practices after living in a liberal college town, I don’t know. Of course, I could have been reading them wrong too.

Bravo for her doing that! I used to see mothers and children ALL the time nursing on the buses or in the commons area. No one batted an eye. Either they were used to seeing that or they were too busy studying for exams! Either way it was nice and glad to hear it.
