What is a 3-step zig zag?

I'm trying my hand at sewing some diapers, and the elastic is giving me trouble. I ran across a suggestion to use a "3-step zig zag" when sewing down the elastic.

I don't know what that is? My machine might have it, it has a lot of stitch options, but I don't know what to look for.

All I know is that I tried zig-zagging the elastic down originally, and it seemed to lose all its stretch. Then I tried just a straight stitch, and it kept some stretch...but I'm thinking it's not as durable to stitch elastic that way?

The 3 step zig zag looks like a zig zag, but instead of stitching right, then left, then right, then left, etc., it stitches 3 small stitches to the right, then 3 small stitches to the left, then 3 small stitches to the right, etc. On most machines it appears as a zig zag symbol with has with dotted lines. Does that make any sense?

When making diapers, make sure you are REALLY stretching your elastic. I always tack the elastic at both ends and then stretch and make it fit and stitch it down. It should be pretty much stretched as much as it will go.

Good luck!

Oh, that does make sense, *thank you*!! I'm positive I've seen that symbol on my machine.

And thanks for the stretching tip, too!
