Dairy Allergy? - 7 month old Eczema

We have had a lot of changes in the last few weeks and I don't know where to start on eliminating things to find the cause.

DS is mostly breastfed, but has had some formula for when I don't pump enough at work. We are using Nestle GoodStart w/ DHA and ARA. But in the last two weeks or so, I have been trying wean away from the pump and therefore he now gets one bottle of formula every day instead of just occasionally.

He also has just finished a round of ammox. for an ear infection and was also using a nebulizer for about two weeks, but we stopped that about a week ago.

I changed diapers from Huggies Supreme to Pampers Cruisers (trying to save a little money by buying at BJs and they don't carry the supremes).

Introduced Stage 2 dinners - Chicken and Rice, Turkey and Rice, and Chicken and Sweet Potatoes. Before that he was on just stage 2 fruits and stage 2 veggies - so the only change is adding the meats.

So about a week ago I notice the skin between his belly button and groin was blotchy. I figured it was because of the change in diapers. The blotchiness turned to a rash and now looks like eczema. He also now has a very serious looking diaper rash - almost to the point of being purplish and looks like it will probably blister.

Then two days ago I noticed that his knees and elbows are red and a little blotchy and look they are turning to eczema.

So I guess part of my plan is to switch back to the Huggies and to start pumping again - I was down to two pumpings and I guess I have to go back to three instead of down to one. That way I can try and eliminate as much formula as possible.

If I still need to supplement with some formula, should I switch to soy or try and buy the hypoallergenic stuff? Do I need to back off the meats? How do I treat the eczema and keep him from itching his belly?

TIA,
Gina

Those baby food dinners also contain modified food starch, which is derived from corn, a common childhood allergen. I would also be concerned about the increase in formula. Commercial formulas usually contain some form of corn, dairy and soy, all common allergens.

Personally I wouldn't blame the diapers. I always did Pampers (Costco) and with 3 kids, there was 1 diaper rash in all that time and it was a yeast infection rash with a horrible stomach virus. I would blame the toddler meals or the formula, not because they're processed, because they're multi-ingredient. Usually the baby food fruits and veggies are just that. But when they get into the "dinners" there are all sorts of extra ingredients. If you've been doing the formula and you hadn't noticed a reaction before, then maybe it's not the formula either. When you used it occasionally, was there any reaction? If not, then I'd look at what's in the baby food meals. And see what's in there that he hasn't had before.

Also, any new detergents or soaps or pets or carpets, or anything like that? Not sure where you live, but it is mold season here and environmental allergies can cause eczema type rashes too.

I wouldn't go to soy, but that's another story.

Well the rash on his lower belly is still there, but the diaper rash is almost gone. I haven't made any changes to his diet or diapers yet. I will probably change the diapers back to Huggies this week. I think the problem is that mesh material they use now - his skin doesn't like it and actually sticks to it occassionally.

The rash on his knees and elbows was gone but came back today - and I realize that it is probably from tummy time and him starting to scoot around more. I think he is reacting to the carpet and dog hair so I'll have to vacuum more.

As for the dinners - they are the Beechnut Stage 2 and it says chicken, rice, and sweet potatoes on one and I think chicken, rice, peas, and carrots on the other. All of which he has had before - except the chicken. So I don't think it is that. I have not given him the beef macaroni one yet since it has a lot more junk in it.

I decided to stick with the same formula for now but bought the one with cultures this time.

Thanks for the help.

Gina
