tough oven to clean - help!!!

Ok, don't tell my mother or MIL , but I haven't cleaned the oven since DS was born...5 years ago! and it's really due...thing is it's really cooked on there and I don't know how to get it clean without going the pure chemical route.

any suggestions?

open the oven and pour baking soada all over it. Spray the oven with water, getting it wet and then let sit until dry. Spray it again and let dry. Spray it again and wipe clean. This takes a while, spraying and drying, but it really works and non-toxic

is the self clean on the stove bad for you ? I'm going to try the BS and water method too.

old junky oven - no self cleaner...I'm the cleaner

so BS, H2O, wait, repeat, repeat, repeat, then wipe?!??!

You could just spray it twice if you want, depending on how dirty it is.

I even used the BS on a glass dish that I burnt walnuts in. Scrubbing with soap and water did not do the trick, then I remembered about the BS, duh!

You can use vinegar instead of water too.

I use the same method Jojo outlined. It works perfectly every time for me!

vinegar/water combo spray is great, too! The vinegar reacts with the BS and makes it fizz up a bit, which seems to help. But be forewarned, sometimes it takes a lot of rinsing/wiping to get all the BS off. It seems like whenever I use BS to clean, I'll think it's all off but then have to go back and rinse again.

I used to use Simple Green to scrub my oven, but I've heard since that it may not be such a "green" product. Anyone have any info on this?
