Nystatin

Ok, so beauty of it is, we have thrush...

I called the doc, who is notoriously busy and un reachable, he prescribed us nystatin (oral for baby, and topical for me). Now, I know I'm supposed to put it on my nipples. Should I wash my nipples before baby nurses next? I don't want to put it in her mouth. She was crying a few mins ago for nursing, but I do not want to put something in her mouth that she can't consume... She already had her oral prescription and was NOT happy about it. This is my most important question. I was reading that thrush thread, but it's so long and I really want to know if we can nurse again, or how soon, or what.

The thrush, near as I can tell, has not really spread beyond her mouth. Sometimes my nipples feel pokey, but not alot. She's not had anything in the diaper area, and I'm praying we can keep it that way. Should we switch to sposies while battling this, just in case?

Also, at LLL they recommended I wash everything using a cup of vineager in the rinse. Any other tips?

Thanks

Sorry I can't give too much help. The one time that I thought I had thrush (tandem nursing after getting lots of antibiotics during labor and my 3yo having antibiotics too...) they gave me a prescription for the baby and told me to put that on my breast/nipple area and that I didn't have to wipe it off before I nursed. However, if your dc really doesn't like the taste, she might start to refuse to nurse if she thinks it's going to taste nasty (kind of like the weaning theory of putting hot pepper on your breast ). Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

The other thing you could do is call a pharmacist- maybe two just to be safe- and ask them if the topical is something that she can't get into her mouth.

Have you read Dr. Jack Newman's info on thrush? It may give you some ideas. I don't think he is keen on nystatin (perhaps there is resistance where he practices?), but there are plenty of other options:

good luck!

Oh - and remember to wash bras, and anything that your baby may have put in her mouth (toys etc) in the vinegar solution too, so you break the cycle.
