Cytotec? How long? (Postpartum)

I posted about having retained some large blood clots postpartum and possible pieces of membranes (not actual placenta).

I went to the doctor this morning and he gave me cytotec vaginally (I forgot to ask the strength). He told me that the show should get started in about 4 hours, and I'm just about on hour 6 and nothing is going on here.
How long does it typically take to work?

Did he tell you this is an off label use for that medication?

I hope you are O.K. That does not seem to be right to me.

No he didn't, however I'm not sure what the regulations are in Canada.

12 hours later, still nothing!

If the cytotec were to work, it should have worked within 30 min. If you are still passing clots, I'd call your Dr again.

The doctor told me that things should start working in 4 hours or so, so I had time to grab a tea and do some groceries before the show got started.

I'm still not seeing a thing! No cramping, not even a twinge. Just some dark red stringy blood, but that doesn't seem very clot-like, certainly nothing plum sized as my midwife told me to keep an eye out for.

It's Friday night, I would assume this doctor wouldn't be back in until Monday. My midwife said that if nothing happens by morning that she would consult with another obstetrician, she seems as confused as I am as to why nothing is really going on here.

My midwife has been amazing during this though, arranging the appointments and calling regularly to check in on me. It's good to feel like she's right there with me, because it is a little worrisome. Such incredibly different care than what I have experienced with doctors.

Cytotec or misoprostol is really an ulcer medication.

I know that you love and trust your doctor, but try to look up any and all medications in the PDR, online, ask the pharmacist, or ask to read the package insert before you take any medication.

Even asprin and acetometaphin have side-effects that everyone should know before ingesting them, pregnant or not. Knowledge is power!

...yes, I am aware of that, thank you. As my OP said, it was given vaginally, so there was no pharmacist involved, or package insert. I don't "love and trust" this doctor, I had never met him before. However, he was highly recommended by my midwife, who I do love and trust. The information you had given me also states that it may be used for other purposes, and does not give information on vaginal use postpartum. Which is a typical (although not ideal) use.

My concern was with how long it typically took for it to work.
