I am thinking of renting these, any opinions?
I am also waiting to see "The Other Boleyn Girl", I've heard that it's not great.

Elizabeth is a great movie, one of my many favorites. Don't waste your money on the second one. Sadly it wasn't good in the least.

I agree with the pp. The second one was strongly anti-Catholic as well, which was a turn off for me.

The first one is very good. I haven't seen the 2nd so cannot comment.

Peace

I enjoyed both of them. Can't comment on the other Boelyn Girl as I tried the book and was pretty turned off to it.

I'd recommend both. Let yourself be distracted by Clive Owen in the second one so you don't watch with too much of a critical eye.

I hope SJ and NP do justice to The Other Boleyn Girl. The way it's being marketed as "sexy" is such a turn off, though.

I watched both recently and really liked both of them.

I'll agree that the "Golden Age" movie did not measure up, but it was pretty.

I thought the first one was very good. I also enjoyed the second one, but I didn't think it was quite as good. Clive Owen was lots of fun to watch! I recommend them both.

Thanks!
I can't wait to see the first one anyway. I love Cate Blanchett!

Has anyone seen the made for t.v. version with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons? My mother told me it was very good.

Yep saw that one too

How could anything with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons be bad anyway

I think it was for HBO. I've seen it a few times, our library has it (free yk) and it's great. Really emotional in some parts too, esp. when she has the earl of leister (sp) beheaded for treason.

Saw the OBG too last week. It was pretty good. I'd watch it again on DVD. The scenery and costumes were really good I thought. The drama keeps you on edge but it starts out slow.

I think the best part about Elizabeth 2 was Cate giving the Spanish diplomat what for-and they played that scene at the Oscars. I was cracking up at how Cate flinched when she watched it.

i loved elizabeth with cate, thought it was an excellent movie.

This.

Sooo much screentime spent on an artsy scene or montage and not much "meat," iykwim.

But I liked it anyway

I haven't seen Elizabeth yet - I asked DH to bring it home when I was sick and I forgot to specify that I wanted the 1st one - so he brought home "The Golden Age" - so I'm holding off on watching it because I've heard it's not as good - and I want to watch them in order. (sheesh run on sentence much?)

I did go to see The Other Bolyn Girl (sp?). Meh... I think it's an interesting story - very poor screen play at least. I didn't read the book. There are scenes where Ann is meant to be very entertaining in court and attracting the attention of the king - so rather than actually writing something entertaining for her to be saying -they just show her from a distance talking and the group of people around her hysterically laughing. It was weak.

I agree with the majority of posters above. The first Elizabeth is wonderful, the second was beautifully shot. I did enjoy Clive (always do, though ), and I thought Cate was superb. The ability she has to make her voice carry is really amazing! But the screenplay was so-so.

The Other Boleyn Girl - meh, like bullfrog said. It wasn't nearly as good as the book. And it seemed way to short at just under 2 hrs. I thought they could have easily added another 15-20 minutes to give it more meat. Are American audiences really that lacking in attention span?

I haven't seen the first "Elizabeth" but DH rented "The Golden Age" a few weeks ago. There were some parts that were just icky-violent to me. Blech. I did like the final scene of Mary, Queen of Scots. I thought it was just beautiful!
