$1100 rent for a smallish 2 br apt in Brooklyn. Only includes heat and hot water. We pay gas and electric. Houses in our neighborhood go for at least $800,000 and 3 br condos for around $480,000...basically we will be in this apartment til we physically cannot fit in anymore!

We got lucky. Our apartment could easily have been rented out for much more giving location and size.
Wow! When I last loved in Chicago 6 years ago I was paying $1200 a month for a 3 bedroom apt in Andersonville. I am not sure where you are but if you are in anything bigger than a studio that is a good deal.

We live on the western edge of the San Fernando valley, and we were so lucky to buy when we did, in January of 2002. We bought our 4 bd/2 ba. 1600 sq. foot home for $310K, and our mortgage payment (which includes taxes and insurance) is about $2400/mo. Rents for comparable homes around here are going for $2600/mo. right now.

We're in Northern Cali...need I say more.

We absolutely love the area, but the mortgage is very high. Our house was a steal in our area at $575K, and we pay around $2900 a month for mortgage.

We live rent and utility free in exchange for 50 hours work per month, and yes I do know how lucky we are!

$730/mo rent in a 1200sf 2bed/1.5bath apartment in an older complex that's in an okay-but-not-stellar suburb of atlanta, georgia. we did sacrifice some shiny-ness to get a decent deal; a comparably-sized but newer apartment in the same area would cost about $100 more per month.

In London we're paying £845 a month for our tiny, tiny 1 bedroom rental...that's about $1700 with the current exchange rate. Makes me sick. London is too expensive. I have no idea what we'll do when we need a 2-bedroom in a few years when we have a child.

$1400/month mortgage repayments plus $126/month council rates. Our insurance is only a couple hundred each year.

ETA: that's for a 3-brm house in Brisbane, Australia, that we paid $235,000 for about 5 years ago.

$1,025 per month, which includes taxes and insurance. Bought the house ten years ago and it will be paid off in eight years. I still owe $60k on it, but my real estate agent neighbor said she would list it for $140k right now if I wanted to put it on the market, and she said she would have people lined up to buy it. It's a 150+ year old house on just under an acre in a tiny little town where everyone knows everyone else. It's about 3900 square feet of living space. My family lives in about 3000 sq ft of that - four bedroom, two bath, living room, large eat in kitchen, family room, laundry room, and a large room that is just studs and flooring that we don't use - and I rent out a 900 sq ft two bedroom one bath apartment to an 80 something year old lady from our church for $450/month.

At least you have less hideous winters! :

I'm really having a bad winter week. I am so hating winter right now. And it's only March. It still has to snow more (what's opening day at Fenway Park without shoveling snow off the seats?) It's the law.
