TTC with MACA Thread! - Page 3

My delivery day will be 5 or so days (I did the whole amazon free shipping thing).

I like the idea of tracking... like date started and date preggers - and then date delivered.

Scientific Studies

For anyone interested in deeply researching maca, here is a list of third-party scientific studies that have been done.

I also wanted to note that I've seen it recommended in various places to purchase only organic maca, and make sure there are no additives.

Some retailers sell 'gelatinized' maca. This form of maca is reputed to be a bit easier to get down, taste and texture-wise. It's just a bit more expensive.

Regarding maca and breastfeeding: Most sites that I've seen say that it's safe, and even say that maca increases milk production. Others, like Amazon.com, say don't take it while pregnant or breastfeeding, but I think that may be for legal reasons since no scientific studies have been done on it

Alice I LOVE the thread change!!! What a fantastic idea!!! This is going to be so cool! *here comes the utter geek researcher in me* :look Hey.. I don't run a book club site for no reason. lol

JSMa/Jenifer, started Maca Organic Powder 2 tbls/day March 17, 2008

DP is not taking currently, though he said would if I asked him too... though he smelled it and I'm not so sure he will now. lol But, I think once I get regulated we shouldn't have a problem, as I know he "works" as he has a daughter.

Anyway... I read a lot, and even though there was some contradictory info on taking Maca and Vitex together, most of what I found said it was perfectly cool to take them together and that it could really add a powerful fertility punch to the system... so I'm going that route. I started both on Monday, March 17... taking 500 mg of Vitex currently.

I also take GNC Prenatal Program with extra calcium and Omega-3 fish something or other... I don't have the package in front of me. I also take B Complex 100 for the extra B6 and B12 and Folic Acid.

Thanks for the recipe ideas! I need to keep experimenting. lol I can chug it... but finding something a bit more palletable would be cool too.

Hmm. I've been taking Maca for about 6 weeks now and got pregnant last month (first PP ovulation at 26 months PP), which ended in an early miscarriage just before 5 weeks. I didn't take it for a couple of weeks during the pregnancy or during "AF."

A couple things:
1. I wouldn't say that it increased my libido but I would say that there was a correlation with my, uh, sexual "response."
2. I have capsule form and apparently am not taking the recommended amount for TTC. Oops.

So I guess add me to the list. I'm going to look into getting the powder form and upping my intake.

because/Jessica, started Maca 2 capsules/daily early Feb. 2008. BFP 4 weeks later but m/c.

Yay! I'd like to join: Librarymo ordered Maca from Amazon and will get it in 5-7 days and then will start taking 1TBSP/day (and so will DH). I'd love a little stocking stuffer of my own. Let's see how well this works!

I ordered maca from Amazon on Tuesday. Amazon is going to be all, "WTF!?! Where is all this Maca demand coming from?" :

So, you stopped taking maca after you got your BFP?

how nice to finally see a Maca thread on mdc! So here is my experience so far w/ it.

I have been adding it to my smoothies since last august. I put 1-2 tbsp in it each day. At this point maybe 1-2 times a month I skip it (meaning I dont make a smoothie at all)

I put the following in my blender.

3-4 brazil nuts
1-2 tbsp maca
1-2 tbsp hemp seeds
1 banana
other fruit (depending on what is around)
apple juice or water (sometimes OJ)

*** w/ the other fruit, i usually like to add something that is frozen. lately it has been 3-4 frozen strawberries. other times its pineapple, or mango.

I also sometimes add 1/2 pear, apple or orange.

I sometimes add it to food, spaghetti sauce hides it nicely, so if I make a home made pizza their is usually maca in it. I did get lots of recipes from that ovusoft forum, but never tried any.

Now as to where I get the maca. I notice many people here and on ovusoft are getting it through amazon.

I started out getting from http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/

then I switched to http://www.pacificbotanicals.com/

The difference in taste is why I switched. Pacific's seems to be a bit milder in flavor, I am still unable to know why, although I have inquired about it. Both places sell it for around 12-13 per lb. and I trust both places as far as quality, I buy lots of herbs from both.

I took it for only 1 month prior to ttc and getting pregnant. I had no cramping at all when I did get a period. Not that I had lots of cramping w/out it, but I would usually get a bit crampy about an hour prior to starting a period. Then in my first tri I had no cramping at all, w/ my first 2 full term babies, I had lots of stretchy crampy feelings throughout the first tri.

I had 3 mc's in a row prior to taking the maca, (after my first 2 full term births). I am not sure if the maca had anything to do w/ me keeping this pregnancy, but I wasn't about to stop taking it to find out.

I am not one to take any herbs to affect hormones, but Maca seemed right for me to take, as pp stated, it only helps your body work better, nothing more. It is food.

wow, that is some awesome anecdotal evidence! I might order some...
Oh, I'm so glad I subbed to this thread!! I think I'll join in - I'll have to figure out where to order it from.....

Is it a powder? How nasty is it? I doubt that I will be making smoothies daily, but if it's jsut nasty, I can take it and get it over with.

I probably won't get mine until 3/31 - 4/4 (darn Amazon free shipping).

Earthymama - It's a root that is dried and powdered. Some people think it tastes like potatoes, some people don't mind. Most mask it in either savory foods or in smoothies.

I'm one of those who doesn't think it tastes bad...which may be because it was part of what I ate almost daily while living in the altiplano in Bolivia. We usually ate it mixed with other freeze dried tubers. But DP doesn't like the taste much. I haven't tasted the powder that is in his capsules but I might do that just to see the difference. I must admit the first few weeks living in amongst the Quechua I had a really hard time getting used to their diet. Too bad I wasn't TTC back then since I had a steady source of baby-making goodness that I didn't know a thing about
I do remember that people were astonished that I had never seen or heard of most of the varieties roots and potatoes they cultivate

I'm not currently taking maca myself but DP is and I'm really eager to lurk about here and see what you all experience...I might be persuaded to add it to my daily regiment of Vitex and EPO??

Ahh, there you go, so that's why my DH is smacking it up. He lived in Bolivia for a year and like you, ate the Quechua diet.
Happy to see the thread and Alice's research. My DH has a normal sperm count, but on the lower side (30 mil) and I have many fertility issues. We've been trying for a year and a half (#1). He takes tons of vitamins, but until now I haven't been persuaded to give him any fert. spec. supplements. Now he's having 1-1 1/2 tbsp of maca in his cereal (4th day in). I take lots of Trad. Chinese herbs so I'm not sure about adding maca for myself, but I started 1 tsp. in my oatmeal (blends pretty well in maple-nut oatmeal btw). One of my main issues is that I have hypothalamus dysfunction (which you don't hear about every day). Basically my hypo. is resistant to giving my body all the approp. hormone triggers despite the fact that I O on like day 9 or 10 often.
Anyway, long story short. We are joining the maca marchers. I got mine at Whole Foods, $19 for 7.1 oz. Maca Magic from Herbs America www.macaroot.com

Hi, so I'm very impatient and stopped by the one and only health food store in all of El Paso and bought some capsules of Maca today. So until I get my powdered stuff from Amazon, DH and I will be taking 2 capsules daily. I am excited to have another thing to obsess over.

Thank you for sharing so much RN!! Wow! So... you continued taking Maca through your pregnancy? I have read a lot, but that is the only thing I am unsure about... is it good to keep taking?

Well, I am still pregnant and still adding it to my smoothie everyday. It is not an herb and does not change your hormones ect. I did talk to 2 different master herbalists and did lots of research. And maca is just a root vegetable, its really not an herb, although it is sold w/ most herbal supplements.

Taking herbal things, such as vitex has never felt right to me, anything that I would have to stop after getting a positive test is not something I feel comfortable taking.

for me it just feels right taking it. My baby looks great via ultra sound, has a great heart rate and moves really well.

There really is no written evidence in our culture regarding taking during pregnancy, but I bet if you went down to Peru you would see lots of pregnant women eating it in much larger quantities than 2 tbsp of powder per day w/ no ill effects.

I think its a personal choice to keep taking it or not to take it. I cannot say if its "good" or "not good" for others to take it while pregnant. But for me, I feel it is a good choice.

Yeah. I take so much crap when TTC with loooooong cycles or loooooong PP period that I quit what I can when I get the BFP. Of course now I wonder if quitting the Maca caused the m/c (or was it the sledding with DD at 7dpo or the beer I had at 4 dpo or the hot shower or the.... well, you get the idea ).

Maybe next time I'll keep taking it... dunno. First, I need to ovulate.

Thank you RN! That makes a lot of sense. Listening to one's body is a good thing to do. I am glad you are having a healthy pregnancy! You must be so excited!!
