does butter count in dairy free diet?

my ds is sensitive to dairy in my diet so i eliminated. i am very careful about reading labels and don't let anything sneak in. however, i have never eliminated butter because i am not comfortable with the alternatives available. i eat some butter every day and he does not seem to react to it. however, he has had chronic cradle cap (that is much better now) and now has a rash on the underside of his chin and in his neck folds... (could just be from drooling alot, though) he also rubs/scratches his forehead alot and it seems like it might be slightly rough (maybe it is itchy) could this be a mild eczema and related to the butter...i have always thought that since the butter is the fat part of the milk it contains less of the protien so may not cause reaction. am i wrong? what do you think about all of this, if it makes any sense at all... if butter may be the culprit i would be willing to eliminate it also and see if these things clear up...

Sorry that your little one is itchy. I'm not sure if the butter would be causing the rash, but butter does still have quite a bit of proteins in it. If you wanted to use something butter related, you could try ghee as it has all of the milk solids, and therefore the protein removed. Are you using it for cooking or for spreading? If you are using it for cooking you could try coconut oil instead. Hope it gets better soon.

Still be careful with ghee, though. You can never be 100% about the proteins. And no, butter is not safe with dairy allergies.

ITA.

Have you tried coconut oil? It seems to work well as a butter replacement. In baking we also use palm shortening.

If it was me, I'd take it out for a week or two and see if it helps. Easy enough to find out if it's the culprit. If it's not, then onto something else.

You should avoid butter in a dairy free diet. We use Earth's Balance 'buttery' spread. We found it at the local grocery store but many health food stores carry it as well. It is fantastic and can be used for baking, spreading, frying, etc.

With ds it did not matter. With dd it definitely did. We had to go completely dairy free in all cooking/baking for her.

butter counts for me But I can buy butter oil (pure oil, zero proteins) so we just use that instead. The kids are fine with it, but if they eat too much of that fat and not enough other animal fats they'll get dry red cheeks.
