Mathilda was Birthed at Home!

Only have a few minutes while our precious Mathilda snuggles with Daddy...

After about 20 hours of labor, 3 of it in transition, 20 minutes in stage two 'breathing her down and out" Mathilda Tobin (Tillie Tobin) slid peacefully into our arms at 10:13 pm last night. She was 8lbs 6oz, 22 inches long and hasn't stopped nursing since! She is perfectly prefect with dark hair and blue eyes (for right now anyway...they could turn i guess!)

Our midwives were so incredibly awesome! I am so proud of my dh and my children...i will have the full birth story and photos up on my site in a day or two. (addy in signature)

By the way, zero complications, zero tearing, almost zero pain. Wonderful, wonderful, dream-come-true homebirth for us! And i have to admit...i look pretty darn good! I've got like a minor belly to work off...i look better than i did before i got pregnant.

And a quick question...would there be a reason for having a super-sized placenta? My mw's commented that they were surprised Tillie was so 'small' and that my placenta was gigantic. They had anticipated her being larger, but were frankly pretty shocked by the size of the placenta. And we had a super-long cord, too. Just curious if anyone had similar or knew of a reason this might be the case.

SO IN LOVE WITH MY BABY, MY BODY, AND MY FAMILY RIGHT NOW! HOMEBIRTH RULES

Congratulations!

So, I don't have a reason for it, but my placenta was HUGE, too. According to my midwife, it was almost twice the size of the average placenta she saw. (this was my last pregnancy/birth. I'm still pregnant (due today) with #2). My daughter was 8 lbs 10 oz and 21 inches long. Neither of our kids were 'small'.

As I said, I have no idea why it was so large, but I can tell you that I encapsulated my placenta, and that placenta is SO nourishing. I was so sick most of this pregnancy, and I started taking the placenta pills I still had left at around 26 weeks, and a week later, I started feeling FANTASTIC, and I know it was my daughter's placenta.

I LOVE the name Mathilda, by the way. And I have an affection for the name Tobin, too, since there was a boy named Tobin I had a HUGE crush on in middle school...

Congratulations.

The size of the placenta and the length of the cord are usually governed by heredity and nutritional factors, as I recall from my research from o, so many years ago.
