Absorbancy testing?

I'm trying to sew a stash of nb diapers for the babe I'm expecting in July. I've designed my own pattern of a serged fitted with no closures with a fold down doubler in the front for adjustablility of the rise. I made my first one last night cut out of double napped flannel to see how it looked before I cut up my hemp fleece.

I really liked how it turned out but I'm wondering how to know if I made it absorbant enough. I made the one last night out of 3 layers of the double napped flannel (much thicker and fluffier than regular flannel) and added a 3 layer sewn in quick dry soaker and the front folds down into another soaker so there is 9 layers in the wet zone. I was planning on making the hemp fleece ones out of 2 body layers which would give 6 layers of hemp fleece in the wet zone.

The one I made out of flannel is slightly less thick than a KL0. I'm trying to balance absorbancy, trimness, and quick drying ability. How much wetness should a nb dipe hold? Is there a good standard to go by? I have no idea how much a typical nb pees in say 2 hours.:headscratch:

I'm so sorry you haven't had any replies!
I am having trouble remembering... I think that I tested for between a 1/4 cup and a half cup on the idea that in those first months a feeding is around 2-3 oz. I based that on what mine would take from the bottle after I started pumping though, and they were both a few months old by then. So.... I don't know how good a guess it was, but it's what I used. And, if it's not enough you can always lay in a doubler! So no worries.

Honestly, I made some nb dipes with less absorbency than my regular and they weren't anywhere near absorbent enough. The next set I made had my regular absorbency and were perfect. Since my DS nursed constantly he peed tons too.

i dont hv access to hemp fleece so i dont know how its like.

but for my DS, his dips are made of microfleece inners, breatheable nylon as waterproof hidden and recycled material as outer. i make AI2/sham pocket opening hybrid. the stuffers/soakers are regular prefolds folded into 3 so that makes 6 single layers, i change him every 4 hours or so and he soaked it but not as much as my toddler. they dry pretty fast in the dryer since its not sewn in aka AIO.

also, a note, if you are making dips for newborn, a gusset in my opinion is greatly needed if you are breastfeeding, i learned that the hard way...lol so now all his diapers has gusset.
