Hi Mamas,

Our gorgeous girl has a bad case of baby acne- all over her face, neck, ears, lower scalp. It seems to clear up and then come back. She is nearly 5 weeks old. Any advice on how to care for her skin?

Thanks!

Oh Dea I know! It looks so red and uncomfortable and just so widespread poor thing! She had perfect skin until 3 1/2 weeks and then- bam- breakouts! Of course this had to coincide with having professional photographs taken...

Another mama told me it would vanish by 6 weeks. Someone told me to squirt breastmilk on it- another just to wash daily with warm water. Nothing seems to make any difference (that- or I am not keeping up doing any one of those things long enough to see a change.)

Grrr...who knows?! And work has been bugging me to take her in so she can meet my 350 coworkers. I'm afraid they will see her skin and think I am a bad parent!

A friend of mine says that her daughter has sensitive skin like hers and she uses cetaphil on her, but she's 4 months old, so I don't know how appropriate it would be for a 3 week old baby.

Time. Gentle cleaning (I used a muslin dipped in water- the muslin was just scrubby enough to help exfoliate) and time.River was a blotchy mess, but he's beyootiful now (6 and a bit weeks.)
So far.

There are several causes for baby acne (normal my ass!), and treating that will solve the problem. With my niece Bella, it went away when I removed tomatos from my diet. Bear's first bit turned out to be thrush, it went away when i treated mine; He got another case and it's disappeared since I stopped eating anything that tastes good. : Not that I'd recommend an elimination diet... but the boy is clear.

anything that tastes good, hu?

I thought I would try giving up dairy to start with- but I'm only really cutting back and not eliminating it. Maybe it is worth a shot...

Hiya!
We have the same thing going on here with my little dd At about 3 weeks she started to get spots, and they're still on her beautiful little face.
I've been looking online for info, and found this site to be helpful. It recommends not doing a whole lot except waiting it out.
We were going to get professional photos done as well, but I've canceled that for now. As far as other's seeing it, I just tell ppl right away "the spots are baby acne, it's normal" and most ppl who have kids understand and share about when their little one had it! the disclaimer is more for childless friends who want to ask, but don't know how to politely say "..wow, she's cute but what's up with the spots all over her face?"

Grant got it a few days after he was born (and I got some pimples too!). I think in our case it was just the hormones shifting. We've both cleared up now and I didn't do anything special, I did squirt breastmilk on our blemishes and that did seem to help but I haven't used any special cleansers or anything.
