Trouble with recycled t-shirt diaper

So I finally made my first recycled t-shirt diaper today. It looks ok, but I had LOTS of trouble with the t-shirt material. Because it was so stretchy, my stitching wasn't as straight as I would have wanted. It doesn't show too much since it's a topstitched and turned diaper but I was wondering if there's something I can do for when I make the next diaper...

Pin. Pin a lot! And then sew slowly, until you get a feel for what you're doing. My first few t-shirt prefolds looked like garbage : I had to relearn the lots-of-pins thing, because my mom had trained me to use as few pins as possible. But in the case of diapers made from stretch knits....pin the crap out of 'em.

mehndi mama...if I do a topstitched diaper with t-shirt material, I'm able to stitch the wrong side of the fabric, but when I turn the diaper over, there's so much material that I'm not able to straight stitch over the fabric again, probably because of all of the layers stuck together (I used 4 layers). I'm wondering if my sewing machine can handle that many layers or if there's something I can do to adjust it (even with the sewing foot all the way up, it's still a tight fit!).

I made a second diaper later on in the day, and I did pin the crap out of it...worked a lot better!

If you find that you're having trouble with all the layers, you can try eliminating one I suppose. How big are you making your seam allowances? If you sew with a 1/4" seam allowance, you can do your topstitching 1/4" in from the edge so you're still only sewing through 4 layers, if that will help.
