Cake Decorating 101

Thread Starter
DS's 2nd birthday is in a few weeks and I'm planning on making his cake myself. He's obsessed with buses, so I was just going to do some very simple roads made of icing and put a few Plan Toys buses on top. Do any of you mamas know any good resources for simple cake decorating tips for beginners? I need to figure out the whole pastry bag and tips thing. Also, any natural/organic food coloring recommendations would be great, too. Thanks!

Cake decorating is so much fun! Here's some of my favorite links.

Inspiration/Ideas

Tips

Natural food coloring - These can be found at Whole Foods, but they're expensive.

Do you have a hobby store like Michael's nearby? They often offer cake decorating classes that are reasonable and give you a good foundation in using icing tips, pastry bags and creating icing effects. Good luck!

You could also decorate with edibles. Maybe use organic fruit roll ups for the roads. They are about an inch wide and pretty long. You could use cookies and pretzels. Maybe you could make street signs somehow using pretzel sticks as the posts with marshmallows on top.
