On Friday, March 14th at 6:02 pm we had a baby boy who we named Aksel Bernhardt. A fast three hour labor culminated in giving birth at the nearby birth center only 40 minutes after arriving there. He came into this world at a whopping 10 lbs, 4 oz and 22.5 inches long! I've never seen such a barrel-chested newborn before. Oh my, this baby was big to push out!
After birth, baby's glucose level was very low and although we stayed at the birth center overnight and into Saturday we couldn't get his blood sugar up to a safe, stable level. The wonderful midwives explained to us that this is, unfortunately, pretty common with larger babies. By the time the ambulance transport team arrived to pick us up at the birth center, he had fine glucose levels but erring on the side of caution, he was admitted to the NICU at the local hospital on Saturday afternoon. Recuperating from such a strenuous birth while sitting in a NICU chair next to a healthy baby is not something that I recommend. But everyone at the hospital was great and worked to get us discharged this morning. It's great to finally be home.
