to hospital or not

ok, here is the scoop. My 4 year old had the stomach flu on Thursday. He seemed fairly good on Friday, ate pretty good on Saturday, didn't eat hardly a thing today, but did drink. But he seemed really happy today. Great mood all day. Never slept at all (nap). My husbands birthday was today and our inlaws wanted us to go out for dinner (a whole other thread as when we go out to dinner the kids seem to get wild). This was the case tonight, ds was going to the bathroom with my dh but decided to run and ran into a mirror. We could hear the impact at our table. He cried. Had a small bump on his head, with a red mark) He seemed fine but still did not eat. Got home to have birthday cake, he still was in a great mood but tired. He went to bed at 8:30. Just woke up at 9:30 and vomitted everywhere. He wanted to go back to sleep immediately. I gave him a bath. Now he is sleeping. I did not think concussion until just now. I am also tired and sick so I guess I am not at the top of my game. Now I am contemplating taking him to the hospital to get checked out. Any thoughts out there?

It sounds like a concussion to me - but I only have one experience with them. I'd call your doc in this case.

Dr. Sears seems to have some good info on head injuries.

Does your hospital have a nurse line?

I will look into the nurse line, we do have something called telehealth. I did read the Dr. sears article.

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional! However, both of my good friends recently had their LOs bonk their heads. Both vomited. One called her ped -- he said one round of vomiting is okay. The other read Dr. Sears and waited it out (b/c she knows her ped is very, very cautious).

Based on the info you've given, I personally would check on him every hour or two, but not go in. You have to do what you're comfortable with, however.

Hope he's feeling better soon!

thanks for the info. I think i am going to just stay put and monitor him from home...if things change we will go in. This stomach flu that we have been battling here goes away for a couple of days and then returns. So I am thinking it could be one or the other.
