aluminum cans
newspaper
magazines
cardboard only really good cardboard though not like my 12 pack cardboards
computer/electronic stuff but only annually
telephone books i thin k
grocery bags
various metals
junked cars and appliences
motor oil
yardwaste
christmas trees

BUT NO GLASS AND NO PLASTIC which pisses me off to no end.....

and i should add none of this is curbside, except yard waste its not even centrally located you have to go all over town to recycle.

we can recycle, through our town, Plastics #'s 1 through 7, Glass Food Jars, Corrugated Cardboard, Mixed Paper, Newspaper, Scrap Metal and Waste Oil.

Plastic shopping bags can be brought back to our grocery where they have a collection bin.

Curbside pickup we can get:

newspapers (bundled and put separate from recycling bin)
mixed paper (bundled separately from newspapers and placed next to bin, no corrugated cardboard or carbon paper)
in the bins:
glass bottles and jars
all rigid plastic containers from food or nontoxic cleaners
metal cans and metal lids from glass jars

Grocery bags can be recycled at most grocery stores, but I use cloth bags instead. The handful of plastic bags I collect in a year get used around the house for various purposes.

Where I used to live, they only collected #1 and #2 plastic, and we were throwing away #3-#7 plastics for years before I realized they DO collect them here!

Our city does an awesome job with recyclables. Lots of stuff can be picked up curbside and there's a drop off center for other things (and you can swap books!).

Here are the details...

They're piloting a program to drop-off kitchen compost at the center.

we can recycle most things at our local dump(except aluminum, they recently stopped taking it : .. but wanted to say my MIL lives in an area with no recylcing at all and somehow she got involved with the city/county about it and now they have a huge really nice recyle center where you recylce anything

Okay, we can recycle only 1 and 2 plastic locally. What can I do with the others? My trash can really bothers me - we compost and recycle and I keep trying to figure out what is in the trash. We are still generating about 2+ bags a week. I wonder how far I would have to travel to recycle the other? I need to pay more attention to what the trash is and reduce it further.
