Okay My 6 year old sin has been diagnosed with migraines. He has for the last year gotten bad headaches where he throws up. We went to the doctor and they said that migraines can be triggered by an allergy or food sensitvity. I have narrowed it down. He usually only gets then in the mornings. They start small and if he tells me right away I can give med and they will stop before becoming a full blown migraine. BUT I can't for the life of me think of a food or ingredient that has been the trigger. Has anyone elses child had migraines before? How did you deal with it?
Thanks

Start a food journal and/or do an elimination diet. From what I know (which isn't too much -- just two friends with migraines), it's usually multiple foods that cause migraines, which may be why it's been hard for you to figure out. Also if he's eating things with multiple ingredients all the time, it's doubly hard.

Hi there,

My 8 year old was diagnosed with migraines about 3 years back. His doctor initally told told him to avoid excesses sugar, caffine, and chocolate. We did avoid those but to be honest he never ate much of that to begin with. Upon a closer look at his diet we have found that both dairy and wheat are triggers for him (both of which would be very prevalent in a typical childs breakfast consisting of toast, or cereal with milk).

It might be helpful for your son to go on an elimination diet to remove well known triggers for a few weeks until (hopefully) the migraines dissipate. Than slowly, one by one, re-introduce a new food group every week. If you son starts to experience migraines again you will have narrowed down the source...

My son can also get migraines from stress which some kids experience on a daily basis as they become excited (either in a good way or bad way) about going to school each morning. hth.

When my brother was a young boy he would get migraines and throw up when he had something with MSG in it...He did seem to grow out of it, though. Now I get migraines with MSG as an adult..go figure.

Thank you all so mcuh! The caffine and sugars and chocolate my son doens't really eat anyway. Though we do drink kool-aid which has that red dye in it and of course excess sugars. we we have started elimenating kool aid and wheat since that is the only things the dinners the night before and breakfast have incommon. We have tried this now for 2 days and it seems to behelping. yesterday he didn't have a head ache and this morning he didn't have one so I think I have it down to those 2 things. I hope and pray it isn't the wheat or we are in trouble we eat lots of pancakes nad waffuls and bread items. LOL I think it is the kool aid myslef with the excess sugar (my dh double what you are suppose to put in). So we will be reintroducing wheat and such next week as long as the head aches stay away for the remainder of this week.
thank you all SO much!
