My friend made me mad today...

I was all excited after my OB appointment today because all these contractions I have been having are finally doing something (3 cm and 50% effaced). I talked to a friend of mine about the appointment, and her response was that she knew someone who was dialated to 3 for weeks before she gave birth. Her comment made me so mad. I mean, I know I could be at this stage for a while, but I was so happy that something was actually happening. Way to crush my rare good mood. Thanks.:

Not in your DDC, but had to respond. Sometimes even our friends don't have a clue. When I was in labor with ds#2, I called my mom from the hospital (because she was watching ds#1) to let her know that we were there and were staying (I had been in active labor at home for several hours), and when I told her that I was 3 cm and 90% effaced, she said "Only 3 cm??". I sat on the toilet and cried. I had the babe 2.5 hours later.

Really, don't let your friend's comment get to you -- your body is doing a wonderful job of preparing for birth!!

yeah, I saw my 2nd midwife for the first time last Friday and when I mentioned (at OVER 39 weeks) that I was REALLY ready to be done with pregnancy, she laughed and reminded me that it could easily be another 2-3 weeks. Um, yeah, thanks for being TOTALLY UNHELPFUL and DISMISSIVE of my feelings!!!!! And then proceeded to tell me how I clearly needed to be doing more to get baby to turn (baby is posterior. I know that. Baby has been posterior for the full 5 weeks I've been working on getting him/ her to turn. I work every day on it. At this point I'll keep doing stuff but I'm not going to beat myself up over not being able to convince a stubborn baby to turn!

So, yeah, I get how that feels. HUGS!

People should *think* before they speak!!! Particularly to very, very pregnant women!

With G, our first, I walked around (a lot of walking!) at 5-6 cm for 2 weeks. Yep, 2 weeks. She arrived on her due date, despite everything i did to restart labor for two whole weeks.

Fast forward to Z, our second but breech baby. I went from finger tip to fully dilated in just over an hour - the labor that was supposed to progress slowly due to her breech position.

You really can't tell by dilation/position- and I hope things move quickly for you!

It took me 8 or 9 hours of pitocen induced labor to get to 3 cm. I consider 3cm an accomplishment! I also went from 3cm to 10 in about an hour and a half.

Your body is making progress! You're right to be excited! Your friend is clueless.

We called my in-laws when I thought I was in labor to tell them that my contractions were 5 minutes apart. My father in law's response? "Contractions don't always mean anything." I was pissed, and the real pisser was when I had hard back-labor contractions off and on for 5 more days before having the baby. Grr.: I agree with the poster who said that those are 3 cm you won't have to do later! You're doing really great and your body knows what it's doing.

OH man....I've done that to someone! I feel awful now...thanks for showing me the other side. I'll definitely be more encouraging from now on.....

although its true that being dilated at 3cm can last for 2-3 weeks it doesnt help to always hear it. we all know that, we're not stupid, we know pregnancy lol, but people dont have to keep reminding you, especially doctors, bc for whenever we hear our midwives say that we're really down bc we feel as if, well they're doctors for pregnancy, they would know better, & once you hear it might be another 2-3 weeks you think its deff gonna be that way bc you're being told by your midwife.

ive been told that soo many times & id just tell the person "well i know about pregnancy too, it can happen at anytime".

just keep in mind, you can be 1cm & go into labor 2 days later! it happens really fast when it wants to so dont get discouraged. itll happen soon!!
