Circ discussed on Oprah TODAY

Oprah is having an all male audience today with Dr. Oz hosting, according to this piece posted on her site they will discuss circumcision: I plan on watching to see if he says anything further on the topic, but here is what was posted from the transcript:

Another topic many men wonder about—but are often afraid to discuss—is circumcision. Dr. Oz says the rate of circumcision in the United States has dropped from 90 percent to 57 percent in the last 40 years.

He says there are some reasons that circumcision makes sense—religious or family traditions, hygiene, and reduced risk of transmitting sexually transmitted diseases and viruses.

There are reasons to not circumcise as well. Some people consider it disfiguring, and doing it will reduce sensation during sex. "In a circumcised male, the bottom part, the underneath part of the penis, is the most sensitive part," Dr. Oz says, using a cucumber wrapped in a sock as a demonstration. "If you've not been circumcised, about half of the erogenous tissue on the penis is actually that foreskin area. Plus the foreskin covers over the glans—that front part, and that's the most sensitive part of the penis—so it doesn't get rubbed on, so it stays a little bit more preserved for when the foreskin eventually does pull back during intercourse."

The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't take a position on circumcision. "They say it's up to you," Dr. Oz says.

For boys who haven't been circumcised, it is important to learn the proper way to clean themselves. Uncircumcised boys are 10 times more likely to get an infection than those who are circumcised, Dr. Oz says.

To do it correctly, "You pull the skin back and you can actually get under here and clean this corner out. Now these edges are where something called smegma resides and that stuff can get pretty nasty if you don't clean it up. But here's the bigger issue. As a doctor I care about this. Most guys who are uncircumcised have the foreskin leading off. This touches the pants and it gets scarred after a while. It can get pretty taut. Sometimes it goes over the tip of the penis and squeezes down on it and that can actually strangle the tip of the penis. That's called a phimosis. When we see it, that's an emergency. And so for folks that have not been circumcised, that's pretty important to keep in mind."

I am 32 wks pregnant and we are not finding out the sex and have been researching circumcision heavily and are planning on keeping our baby intact if it is a boy, so I'm very sensitive to this topic any time I see something discussed b/c we recently made this decision.

ooooh- it's a rerun and Dr. Oz is a jerk. He calls vaginas "self-cleaning ovens" but insists the foreskin is dirty. grrrrrrr.

And his "method" of cleaning is totally off. Wipe it like a finger, that's it... Girls have more smegma than boys, and the medical advice to clean all of it out from under the clitoral hood was abandoned decades ago. Did you know girls were once circ'ed in this country for the same reason?

Yeah I thought that was a rerun. Dr. Oz was frightening. He said the foreskin wears down over time. I think he is heavily influenced from his Turkish background. The turks are CRAZY about circumcision.

wheelsx2, congratulations on your decision to keep your boys WHOLE You're one smart mama and thats one very lucky kid!!!

Oh wow, 1111, this is a lucky post!

That whole paragraph is just wrong. Just all wrong!

What??? Strange we never hear anything about these things here in Norway, where nobody circumcises. Nobody here worries about the foreskin at all, and I have never heard of any boy getting an infection because of the foreskin, or a "strangled penis" (whatever that might be). I have never heard of anybody even considering retracting a boy's foreskin.

I hope (probably in vain, unfortunately) that nobody who watches the programme will believe in this nonsense.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize it was a rerun....I've never heard of some of his reasons either, sounded VERY medical to me and we're sticking to our decision (not that Dr. Oz would have changed it).

UGGHHH!!! My Mom is going to watch this and I'll be getting a call! My Dad is not circ either but is from a different generation and is always telling me to "pull ths skin back and clean it real good." I am copying that part of the transcript and sending her my facts before she calls!!! She probably will before she gets back online though!!! My son is now 7 and we have never had a problem but she will be sure to tell me how we're going to!!!!!!:

So she completely ignored all the letters saying it was incorrect and harmful and replayed it w/o correction (or do the networks just pick episodes for reruns?)

Grrr.

Does labia wear down with time?
Ok, so now that I've had time to stew, lol! He says that one reason to circ is because the boy wants to look like Dad. WHA? I've never heard of a newborn boy speaking up and asking to be circumcised to he can match Daddy. "Hey mom, I've never seen Dad's gear, nevermind even know what it is, but could you slice off a piece of my penis so we can match?"
I don't think mom will watch this but who knows maybe my stepfather will -I will just say he's from turkey and is a heart surgeon not even doctors in turkey do circumcision it's what I think they cal a different kind of name but in what they call a circ palace so i would not believe what kind of nut he is

True. Well everyone gets at least one correct, right?

Actually, no rational thinker can defend circumcision. We know hygiene is a myth I mean if someone thinks their son can't handle this simple task there are bigger issues ahead.

Of course being a rerun, the Dr. proabably didn't have access to yet another study published in the March 2008 Journal of Pediatrics, "Circumcision and Risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections in a Birth Cohort" by N. P. Dickson, T. Van Roode, P. Herbison and C. Paul, J Pediatr 2008;152:383-7, shows that circumcision does NOT prevent STDs.

Of course that is of little excuse since these findings are consistent with recent population-based cross-sectional studies in developed countries [such as the Australian Study (International Journal of STD & AIDS August 1, 2006; 17(8): 547-54.) of about 10,000 men and the British Study (STI 2003 Volume 79: Pages 499-500, December 2003) of approximately 2,000 men] which found that early childhood circumcision does not markedly reduce the risk of the common STIs in the general population in such countries. But you can bet people will still use that excuse. Which he should have known about.

I think it is more than some, perhaps much of the world (to varying degrees). Thing is though most don't think about it any more than they might ponder lopping off an ear lobe. Funny though the Dr. does talk about the foreskin being an erogenous zone but then of course it seem ethics doesn't really enter his mind. Perhaps half a step forward? Maybe?

Both true and false. They don't recommend it but then take the cowards path out for PC reasons I guess.

It is also important to learn to brush your teeth, wash in the tub, and wipe your .... well. Funny thing is this activity, that the Dr. seems to think is some sort of insurmountable brain-teaser, will proabably be the most enjoyable of the lot.

Huh? This is all wrong. I hope nobody is paying attention to this quack. Now I've never heard of the foreskin being in contact with the pants causing a problem but I wonder what the doctor would call the condition when the head is in contact with the pants and does develop scar tissue in what 10% of circumcised boys?

Congratulations, your son is lucky to have such thoughtful parents.

Wow what a load of bill. This is why drugs are illegal.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Oprah has a circumcision fetish. Think about it yourself!

She does a show on using baby foreskins in skin cream and gets lots of nasty mail. What does she do? She re-runs the show and gets more nasty mail. So what does she do then? She has the people back for a return appearance and get even more nasty e-mail and re-runs the show again to only get more nasty mail. She wore that topic out so she gets a doctor from a country that circumcises all the boys to promote circumcision and gets more nasty mail. Then, she runs the show again!

Oprah doesn't come on my television anymore! She's one sick woman!
