The Story of Stuff

I think this movie gets down to the real heart of what the entire problem with our environment stems from. If you want to really go super green this is a must see.

I saw that a while ago, it's good. George Carlin had a really good bit about "stuff".

I totally LOVE this little movie!

thanks for posting the link! I've been wanting to watch that

Does anyone want to discuss it? I just watched it.

It was pretty eye opening for me. Like most things with related issues, I know bits and pieces of why simplifying, going local, recycling, etc is a good idea, but when it's put together like that it makes so much sense to me. I had a long conversation with a friend of mine, who is a director of a food coop, and that conversation was a similar experience. There's a lot I want to change about the way I do things.

I didn't think there was that much new info for me but I always appreciate being reminded. I do agree with the constant NEED to shop, I myself find I'm being enthralled by items I see. it's kinda scary.

Since people are going to start getting their tax rebates soon, I thought this might be a good time to bump this.

: Even if I stay home and don't go out anywhere it seems that I still find things I *need.* To be fair I'm trying to be concious of everything I purchase (no plastics, etc), but it's so overwhelming sometimes!

Yes, I thought I was doing alot in terms of being very earth friendly. When I saw this link I didn't expect to learn anything new. I was wrong. I was of course already buying used most of the time. But, I was a dollar store lover and Target clearance shopper big time!!! The movie opened my eyes to how my dollars vote and can say these ways of harming the earth and people are okay or not. I vote not and so I buy used all the time now. When I say we only buy food, toilet paper, and soap new my DH laughs. It is obvious those things have to be new but it is the only thing we buy new so I like to state the obvious I guess.

I was encouraged when I saw a poll that showed that most people are not going to go shopping with their rebate checks, but now the big retail stores are offering incentives for spending rebate checks at their stores, so now I'm worried that their tactic might work and the numbers might change.

I want to e-mail this to everyone I know. It kind of makes me never want to buy anything again. It's renewed my committment to living green, which has kind of been on the wayside since becoming a new mother. I've been so overwhelmed with parenting that I just stopped caring about anything else. You would think becoming a parent would make me start worrying about this stuff, but for some reason I just felt like I had no time to worry about the environment anymore.

I like this movie; it's really important for everyone to see this, but it does kind of make me feel like crap. Which is okay. I deserved it.

Every time I buy something now I think "will I still be using this in 6 months?"

thanks for posting. This was very interesting and educational. It also inspired me to buy recycled sneakers online for my son, instead of heading to target like usual. I think I will definitely think through my purchases from now on.

I totally need to watch this. Although we don't own much, I'm still a HUGE online shopper for the things I "need". Maybe this will help me stop buying things.

Never heard of this movie. I'll look into it! Although, sort of dreading finding out more of what's wrong with my personal habits! ha ha!
