I'll be taking it in the next few months! Just waiting for new from NARM to set up my date!

I hear that they test you on 3 random skills, though.

So NARM sets it up. What is the time frame that they set it up for you?

Is there a 'live model' involved?

Mine had a pregnant mom and a newborn babe that I had set up through the person administering the testing. Then she opened an envelope that had the skills I would be tested on. You dont know ahead of time which ones you'll get - but I believe they all come from the skills book for midwives that NARM says to study. You just need to do everything for that particular skill, in order and not forget anything. The administrator of the test marks down what you complete and then sends it in.. then its graded and you get your results. I had to travel a bit to find someone to do it for me because one of the requirements is that it cant be administered by someone your apprenticing under or who has signed off on your skills book.

Only three skills??? I thought they asked you to do much more than that!

Once they approve your application, they send you info with the Qualified Evaluators in your area that you can use, and then you contact them to set up the time. I'm not positive on the time frame, but I believe you have to pass within a certain time before you sit for the NARM. That is why the PEP application deadline for each NARM test date is earlier than that for the MEAC-schooled applicants.

There is another option...

You can do the secondary skills assessment.
That is what I did...and NARM told me I was the first person to ever choose the option.
You don't have to go anywhere for a skills assessment you just have to sit down with another CPM>

I looked into that and it sounds like what I might do.

Wow. It looks so much less nerve-wracking!

I think to take that option all of your preceptors need to be CPMs. That didn't work for me, but it could for a lot of people.
Yes, that's right. All your preceptors must have been CPMs, and the CPM that signs off on your secondary skills assessment cannot have signed off on any of your births.
yes i just sat down and went over everything but it must be a cpm who has not signed off on any of your other skills (the big pack).
It can be a CPM who has signed off on a birth though.

Oh, sorry, you are right. The CPM just can't have signed off on any skills for you (on form 201).

Huh, I hadn't read about the secondary skills assesment. That is in interesting option and I am going to look into that more.

Hi,

All this time I was planning on taking the PEP exam but now I am wondering about the secondary skills assessment. For those of you who have done it that way, did you have to apply with the NARM like you do the PEP process and wait for them to set up your date or do you just find a midwife to do the assessement with and then send in the paperwork. I had read that you can only do the PEP exam in February or August so that would push my NARM exam date back to August of 2009 instead of February of 2009 when I had originally planned to take it. If I do the secondary skills assessment could I then sit for the NARM next February? Thanks for any information you can provide.

Lisa
