He's here.....

My sister had her baby!! I just got home. She is like the envy of every woman, lol. She was in labor for 7 hours and pushed for about 15 mins!! No epidural! She's awesome! It was the coolest thing ever.......I didn't feel sick or anything, which surprised me, lol. I held one leg and her fiance held the other and our other sister took pics. It was so cool and happened so fast. Anyway, he was born at 11:24am weighing 7lbs 10oz and 21ins....his name is Michael Anthony. It was such a cool experience!

On to the ignorance.....luckily my sister is like me...pro-bf'ing and anti-circ, so no worry there. Well she made a little sign to hang in his baby bed "I'm intact so please do not retract" (Got the idea from me that I got from here, lol). Anyway.....the nurse brought the baby back to her finally and here's the convo....

Nurse...."About the retraction, you need to retract it, you know to keep it clean"

Sister..."No, you don't have to retract it"

Nurse....quickly says "Well the Dr. will be in soon to give you the info on it about retracting to keep it clean"

Sister....."I have the info and you don't retract it"

Nurse....."Well, technically you do"

She was a major b*tch! So my sister and I got first hand experience on the ignorance when it comes to the intact penis! I'm so glad my sister knows better.....but this is the info they're giving out!! OMG!!

Your sister was right, the nurse was wrong. PLEASE have your sister write a letter of feedback to the hospital about this. Write it for her if you have to. Send them the AAP info on care of the intact penis, which says do not retract. Things are only going to change when health professionals are educated and made accountable for the information they give to parents.

Otherwise, congrats on what sounds like a wonderful birthing and another boy left intact!

I second the recommendation to write to the hospital. Some women aren't as smart as your sister and will take the incorrect nurse's information and retract the poor baby!! This incorrect information needs to stop and just ignoring it won't do anything.

On the other hand, CONGRATULATIONS on your nephew!!! Im so happy your sister kept him intact!! woo hoo!!!

What did the Dr say then?

How awful, Glad your sister is so informed! Congrats on the nephew!

Thanks ladies. I misunderstood, the ped won't be in until tomorrow. So she hasn't been in yet. I talked to my sister on the phone earlier and get this.....she was looking through the info packet they give and there's a section in the care of the intact penis.... in big bold letters "DO NOT RETRACT THE FORESKIN....it'll retract on its own in 3-5 years" etc etc. So they have the right info but apparently the nurse(s) haven't read it. This same nurse gave me problems there when I had my daughter, she was so uninformed about breastfeeding, she really ticked me off....I wanted to leave that night! So anyway.... my sister has some articles printed off and she has them with her.....so she's armed for when the ped comes in tomorrow. That and the info THEY have!

Congratulation to your sister. I agree with the previous posters. Perhaps, if she have a good and knowledgeable doctor, she could work through her doctor. If her doctor wasn't any better just do an end run around him/her and write letters to the hospital as previously suggested.

That nurse needs some letters written about her. Not every woman is as strong or as informed as you and your sister. I bet that nurse has led many new moms along the wrong path.

Wow...incompetent and b*tchy--awesome. Good for you sister for being such a great mama and congrats to her and to your entire family. What a lucky little boy!

I know shes probably got her hands full with her new bundle of joy, but please please ask her to write a letter about this woman!!!!

Congrats!!! Welcome baby Michael Anthony!

I am so glad your sister is informed and sorry there is still so much ignorance about intact care in the medical field. If they don't harm them by promoting circ/performing them they hurt them by giving inaccurate and harmful care instructions.

I'll agree with this! I distinctly remember a mother on another board whose doctor told her to retract every day and wipe the baby's glans and foreskin down with alcohol wipes. She said she did it despite the baby's screams and wondered if circumcision wouldn't have been more humane in the end.

She was a new computer user and new to the internet. She was of Hispanic origins and circumcision was naturally foriegn to her. But, she trusted this doctor implicitly. He was recommending a circumcision and the information she learned on the internet about forceful retraction and the alcohol wipes contradicted everything the doctor told her. She got to the point of mental meltdown and her husband took the computer and sold it to end her distress.

Here's a little update....the ped went in to see her this morning. And luckily he knows what he's talking about. My sister asked about what the nurse had said just to see what he would say. And he told her not to retract. So I HOPE he speaks with this nurse!! Yes, my sister does plan on writing a letter and I'm going to do the same.
