Help! Gak / Goop not working!!! (Glue & starch)

The "space goop" at my daughter's preschool kept her (and me!) entertained for HOURS! Now that the baby is here I was hoping to duplicate it at home. The recipe is one part elmer's glue to one part liquid starch - plus some food coloring mixed in. So far, I've used a gallon of glue and a half gallon of starch, but the starch is not all getting absorbed by the glue -- so it doesn't seem to make sense to keep adding starch. Rather than being liquidy, it is more stringy -- sort of like melted pizza cheese or ribbons. There is a pool of starch around the goopy mess in the middle. My daughter was entertained for about 5 minutes! It's just not as much fun.

Does anyone know what I did wrong? Does it take time for the starch to get absorbed? Please let me know!!!

Thanks!

I've never done the glue and starch. I've done water and starch, I think about equal parts. You could try that.

I have always just used water and corn flour. Just mix the water in a bit at a time, its easy to mix too much in.

Here are some fun recipes left over from my pre-k teaching days.

Silly Putty:
2/3 cup white glue
1/3 cup liquid starch
Pour ingredients into a large bowl. Mix them together using a heavy-duty spoon. Pour off any leftover liquid. Store in an air-tight container. Putty may be a little stiff in the morning. Knead it up until it softens.

Slime:
Combine 1/2 cup cornstarch with 1/4 cup water. Add food coloring to tint. Experiment with this solution that goes from a liquid to a solid in your hands.

Have Fun!

I have never had good luck with that one either.

My favorite is Gooey Gunk from the Kid Concoctions book.

Solution A
1 cup water
1 cup white glue
2 tbs tempra paint or 7-10 drops food color

Solution B
1 1/3 cups warm water
4 tsp borax laundry booster

Mix solution A together. Mix solution B together in a larger bowl. Make sure all borax is disolved, if there are any chunks that will not dissolve make sure you pull them out or you will have chunks in your gunk. Pour solution A into solution B. Do not mix. Lift out gunk and have fun! This keeps in a bag or container for quite awhile.

My son loves this stuff! It is not only slimy it also has enough body you can cut it with playdough tools. Fun!
