ok I know its a bit dumb.. but I'm kinda curious if anyone knows...

why does ravelry actually have a waiting list... what is the point...:

just wondering

I'm not sure I completely understand the question.

My understanding of the waitlist was that there was a high demand for memberships and members had to be added manually or slowly or something. Basically, the folks who run ravelry simply could not add so many new people at a time.

sorry... but yes thats what I wanted to know...

thank you

My dh said it is probably because a server can only provide so much and so new sites add people slowly so as not to exceed their limits... so more hardware than just having to approve members...

but I think both reasons sound plausible.

Yep- ravelry is now on their final servers, if I understand correctly, which is why the waiting time is down so much. I think I waited about a month?

I had to wait 3 weeks for my membership and it was well worth the wait!

lol... I realized how snarky I was... I apologize... it just didn't make sense to me... like myspace and youtube don't have waiting lists

but I understand now... thanks for the replies... and again... sorry for the snark

Also, they began as Beta, not sure if they are out of Beta yet, but what that means is they were just starting it up, not ready for a million people, so they opened it to a few as they tested their system and ironed it all out, and made a wait list, so that they could add people as they had the capability for. Googlemail did the same thing; when they were in Beta, it was limited to invitation-only to get on.

They still are in beta.

From the About page:

3. Why is this site not open to everyone? Are you being snobby or what?
We are inviting people in bits and pieces- not because we want it to be exclusive but because we only have one Casey code monkey to keep up with updates and bugs! We are still building the site and do not want it to blow up on you guys. So if you do post about Ravelry on your blog, please let everyone know we are adding new folks as quickly as we can from the invitation waiting list... we certainly do not want to come off as non-inclusive. More information can be found here and you can check how we are progressing with your invite here. Everyone really is welcome on Ravelry!
