Cleaning supplies! What do you use...

Thread Starter
for mopping?
for wiping down countertops?
for cleaning toilets (inside and surface)?
for cleaning bathtubs/showers?
for cleaning mirrors/windows?
for spot cleaning carpets?

Also, what kind of detergent do you use in your dishwasher and for laundry?

I'm about to be letting my housekeepers go and cleaning my own house, so the chemical cleaners are getting the boot.

Thanks for your help!

for mopping? vinegar in water
for wiping down countertops? A spray bottle filled with 2 cups water to 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
for cleaning toilets (inside and surface)?undiluted white vinegar
for cleaning bathtubs/showers?baking soda or Bon Ami for scrubbing, or a quick wipe down with a damp rag
for cleaning mirrors/windows? spray bottle with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to a cup of water
for spot cleaning carpets?usually just a damp rag, sometimes with some Ivory soap on the damp rag, "rinsed" with a fresh damp rag. For vomit on carpet I use vinegar to get the smell out.

Also, what kind of detergent do you use in your dishwasher and for laundry?

I currently use 7th Generation dishwasher detergent, but before we moved (different dishwasher) I was able to use plain borax in the dishwasher with good results. I'm currently using 7th generation Laundry detergent, but in the past I've made my own detergent (coming to the conclusion it was too much effort for the money I saved) or plain baking soda in the wash, no detergent added at all. With my front-loader, I use small amounts of detergent, and found I needed just as much baking soda as I'd needed in the top loader, so it's actually cheaper to use detergent.

for mopping? - water and vinegar, soap to clean up sticky stuff.
for wiping down countertops? - a mixture of water, a little dish soap and some TTO (we have granite and can't use vinegar).
for cleaning toilets (inside and surface)? - vinegar
for cleaning bathtubs/showers? - vinegar
for cleaning mirrors/windows? - flat club soda
for spot cleaning carpets? - we use our steam cleaner with vinegar instead of commercial cleaners.

We are rotating through the greener options on the dishwasher looking for a good fit. Right now, Ecover seems to be doing pretty well. For laundry, I use 7th Generation but want to switch to making my own.

We also use Bon Ami and baking soda for scouring sinks and the like.

You didn't mention cabinets, but I love to wipe them down with Murphy's Oil Soap.

I use a name brand DW detergent like Cascade or Sun because the off-brand ones don't clean as well and turn the inside of my DW, peach/orange. For the laundry I use the cheapest liquid detergent (1/4 cup per large load), vinegar instead of fabric softener, and 1/8 borax with my whites and towels.

I'm about to be letting my housekeepers go and cleaning my own house, so the chemical cleaners are getting the boot.

for mopping? Method floor cleaner (from Target) with a washable mop head
for wiping down countertops? A washcloth with a squirt of dishwashing liquid
for cleaning toilets (inside and surface)? A brush and simple green. I use Bon Ami for rust spots.
for cleaning bathtubs/showers? I squeegee the shower after using every day. After bathing the kids, I immediately wipe down the tub with a washcloth (no cleaner). To do a big cleaning, I use simple green
for cleaning mirrors/windows? Restore brand glass cleaner
for spot cleaning carpets? I don't

Also, what kind of detergent do you use in your dishwasher and for laundry? Method brand (from Target) or Country Save for laundry detergent. For dishwashing detergent, I buy whatever 'natural' brand is on sale.
