Dread~head mid-2008 - Page 2

Hi. I've been thinking about dreads for awhile. Maybe mine when it gets a little longer, maybe doing my ds's as well. I just thought I'd sub here and hang out for awhile.

Wonderma! Her hair looks amazing...Mine is like nine months old now and doesn't look nearly as good! She's so cute, too. I'll bet she will enjoy the low-maintenance aspect of locks. I know my dd (who is 9) would love it, but she's old enough to care what people think..and she always points out that people are staring at me She has the same fine, thick, tangly hair as me though, so I think it would really cut down on the tears at comb out time....we'll see. Thanks for sharing your daughter's process with us! Absolutely beautiful...

My DD is very much loving the new do!

She doesn't really mind the palmrolling and separating, the strings really help a lot. She is very very proud of her locks, and helps me roll the ones she can see in front.

Here is her one week progress:

Yes! DD2 has 2 or 3 in the back that I just can't bear to comb out! Her dad is all for leaving them, so we probably will.

Hi all! I'm subbing to this thread- maybe it's spring fever or something more, but I'm thinking about dreads seriously. I have tailbone length hair, and it's been the same straight all my life. I can't bear to cut it short, but I think I might be able to bear dreads- my only fear is that if I change my mind, I WILL have to cut it short.

lookin good, wonderma...I'll have to snap a shot of my little guy. We've never brished his hair and its all locked up in the back but not the front. He wanted them, and says he will let his locks grow to the ground! They are just naturally formed, and I have never had to even separate them. They are slowly creeping towards the front of his hair. I guess one day the whole head will catch on!

So, how do the grandparents feel about it?? My side of the family gives us much grief....so annoying!!! My dp's side respects his personal choices, thankfully!

sunmama, the IL's have been good about it so far. I think they are never sure what to expect of me, so they just roll with it!

My folks haven't really said anything, but we haven't seen them in quite a while. I sent my mom pictures and she just said, "wow, ok" and that was about it.

I miss mine so much. I just cut them off because I had to show up in a conservative court in western Maryland...
In a fanatic rush of pregnant confusion I decided to remove my dreads. Sigh.
At least court went amazingly well and sadly, I think not having the dreads helped a bit.
Can't wait to start them up again. Maybe in a few years my little one will want em too!!

So right now, I wash my hair about every other day, and usually at night so I let it air dry. Then I brush it in the morning, put it in a pony, and go. Very low maintenance, I like it that way. I was under the impression dreads were low maintenance, but now I'm starting to wonder- what is your daily hair care routine like? Do you have to blow dry when you shower? I don't even OWN a blow dryer, and it seems pretty silly to go out and purchase one for dreads.

I don't own a blow dryer, either. Honestly, it was kinda high maintence at first for me, because I hadn't brushed my hair in probably a year and it was board straight. So we had to backcomb and use wax and needle felt and all of that. Now I don't do anything. If I want to look really nice, I'll roll them while wet with aloe, but other than that, I just wash, dry and go.

So it's ok to let the dreadies air dry?

I used to always let mine air dry.
but then I realised that I wasn't washing them enough, and avoiding getting my hair wet all the time, coz it takes literally a full day to dry. so i was only washing my hair on hot sunny days when i had the time to spend the day outside in the air. if i stayed inside, my hair would still be damp by night.
so, a couple of months ago, i bought a cheap hairdryer, and it changed my life. actually, it's really good for killing lice too

that said, I never had a dryer till now, and my dreds are VERY thick - the thickest is about 2.5" thick, and they are mostly very very hard compacted, and the longest ones are to my knees (actually one is almost to my ankles). Most dreds aren't old and solid like that - they dry much easier.

mine have always been low maintenance. I got them through the neglect method, and never did anything to them except for a good wash in water only.

I have been letting my DD's air dry for the most part. They aren't too thick, but she has afternoon swim lessons and sometimes she leaves her hair down so I blowdry the strings a bit. They seem to take a long time to dry, and DD doesn't mind having them dried a little.

She is still really loving them! I am going to go and roll and separate some right now while she's watching TV.

I don't blow dry mine either. But, mine do take about 24 hours to dry completely. Now that my locks are formed I really don't do much to them. I wash once or twice a week depending on my mood and I palm roll like once a week.

I have to agree with a pp about spring fever. Change is in the air in so many ways in my life. I've always found dreads fascinating but I've choose to do other things to my hair(lots of coloring and funky cuts). I would love to dread my hair today, but I have to get through some 'baggage' first. Really consider some questions like "Why am I doing this?" Just to look cool ?
One really practical concern I have is how are they to sleep on?

I think I might have been the one to say spring fever- that's *definitely* how I feel, anyway! I have NEVER changed my hair my whole life, and I'm doing it because I want to make my outside more match my inside- I realized that it's hard for people to "know" me by looking at me, you make assumptions about the kind of person I am, and they're usually wrong. So, in order to reveal myself as a total hippie to the world, I want to dread my hair. : My mom will HATE it, as she's always been a total control freak over my hair, and I'm not sure if dh will get used to it... but I think I'm going to do it- its SCARY making such a change, because if I don't like it, I'll have to CUT them out, and my hair has never been shorter than bra strap length. So, it's a hair risk, and I've never taken a hair risk before. It's a BIG DEAL for me to even be posting on this thread.

majikfaerie, do you have pics of your dreads posted anywhere? I'd LOVE to see them! I think long dreadies are SO beautiful!
