I think that unless someone gets the bill, looks at it, and writes the check subtracting it from the total amount of money they have, they aren't going to learn anything from the experience.
Generally, people spend more money when using plastic than when using cash because we all tend to think about money differently that way.
If you have decent credit, you can always co-sign for a card when they are older, and help them get a secured card by helping them have a set amount in savings, and then getting a card from the same institution with a credit limit equal to the amount in savings.
I'd rather teach my kids to handle money than give them good credit. If they can handle money, they will end up with good credit.
