Do you like these? And how much $?

ETA- if this is the wrong forum, let me know.

I made these tops for a couple of friends, and now everybody is requesting them (even people I don't know) They are cheap red heart acrylic- so maybe 5-6 bucks a dress for materials. they take about 6-7 hours. How much would you charge? I'm thinking of opening up a table at a bazaar. What do you think?

Here they are. Sorry about the quality- they are from a cam phone.

So cute! I don't know what I'd charge for them--it always seems like once you figure in the amount of time you'd have to charge a ton for them to be worthwhile in an hourly sense, kwim? Maybe $25-40?

They are cute. Honestly I am not a huge fan of acrylic for clothing. I would pay probably $25 depending on the size it works out to be. More for a larger size.

I'd start around $40 and make sure to include a nice card with the "fiber artist's" name (yours) and a little story about your design and inspiration for the dress or knitting (makes things a little more giftable or just helps them realize how special handmade is IMO)... (very cute btw)

Then scope out the fair and make sure your prices are in the same range as other similar handmade items.

They are cute! I'd charge WAY more than $25, and I'd figure out a different yarn to use if possible- even try it in cotton and see what that's like.

My time is worth more than $3/hr!

Thanks! You all have been way helpful. I was thinking of 20, but now I think I'll up it to 25. I looked around at kids clothing stores (children's place, gymboree, pumpkin patch) and no one has the same kind of thing. Thank you so much!

those are cute. to be honest though i wouldn't pay much for acrylic ($20-$25). that same dress in cotton or wool thuogh - $50-$75 easy.

a good place to judge prices on similar items is www.etsy.com.

here is a couple moderately similar things just for comparing prices (I do not know or endorse any of these items or sellers . . . .just looking for things of similar style for comparing prices)

and I tihnk yours are cuter than anything listed there . . . .

They're adorable! Very cute.

I would say at least $40.
I know that's not a lot for your time, but it's also I would think enjoyable time, so you would not expect to get as much per hour as you would at a dreary job...

If you were to make a bunch, I don't know if they lend themselves to being a little shorter maybe, to save you some time.

Best wishes with them!

You can make them from acrylic and charge around $25. Which once you subtract $5 for materials leaves you with around $3 per hour, not including overhead.
Or...

You could make them in a nice cotton, linen or silk and charge $50 to $70. Which once you subtracted $10 to $30 for materials leaves you with around $6 per hour, not including overhead.

I would decide based on what kind of market you are in.

You have all said what my DH has said- use nicer materials, get more. I am going exploring after the weekend!!!

Not that its about money (although as a sahm, a little extra would be nice) but I do want to make a quality product. You have all been SOOOO helpful. This is the first time I have shown anyone one of my "creations" and you all have been very kind. Thank you!

Your work looks great and worthy of nice yarn. I agree with pp around $30 acrylic. Higher quality materials would bring a much higher price. For a table at a sale, maybe have both kinds available. People can see the difference in price and quality.

Another thought, if you have written your pattern down I believe Ravelry makes it easy to sell them online... most patterns I've seen are around 3-5 $.

Am I right in assuming these are in kids sizes? While I normally would agree with everyone on here that acrylic is never as good as the natural fibers, if they are kids sizes, you might do fine to use a nice acrylic so they are easy to wash. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of these in my size in a more expensive yarn, but for a kid, I wouldn't spend too much because how long would they be able to wear them?

I love them, by the way. SO cute. I would like one in my size if you are selling your pattern...

You probably already know this, but Knit Picks has decent quality, natural fiber yarns for very reasonable prices. I think their superwash wool is about $4 for 50 grams. They also have cotton and linen blends.

OTH, bamboo would be wonderfully versatile--soft an cool if worn alone in the summer, but still comfy over a long sleeve top in the winter.

Good luck!

peace, Beth

These are kid's sizes. I am going to have to research yarn! I have yet to do an adult one yet. Maybe I'll experiment...

Thanks for everyone's help! I am working on a batch of 3 matching ones (each one a little different) for 3 sisters. Wish me luck!

: I bought DD a dress with a crochet top and a hand dyed skirt for $45 when she was 12 months. I just sized up, since it was a dress it didn't matter how long it was, and she wore it for two summers. I still have it. the dress is beautiful. I am going to give it to her when she is older.
