What is the OB thinkin?!

Ok, Well, first off I just want to say that the closer that I get to having the baby the better I feel about "attempting" a HBAC! The more I see my OB the more I get a little concerned that he really is not at all about doing what is best for the baby, if it means non medical intervention. I actually had the man tell me that he doesn't want me to carry over b/c there are so many other risks that we run into at that point, it is not worth it. He also offered to INDUCE me (ummm.. my last was a c-section) if I meet all his qualifications for an "optimal vbac trial" . SO, that being said.. I am very happy that I really don't have any more concerns about what is better. Unless there is a real medical NECESSITY, there will be a HBAC. Can't wait to transfer to my mw when she moves a little closer here in the next couple of weeks. Just wanted to share, I thought someone else could see the irony in how the Dr. that is supposed to protect, is really having a difficult time reaching that part of his "calling" . Hope you ladies have a good day! Thanks for all the encouragament so far!!

I'm basically in the same boat as you. If I had one bit of advice it would be just don't go anymore, really. Induction on a VBAC is SO not a good idea! I was induced with my 1st VBAC attempt, it wasn't pretty - and it didn't work. Let your body work. Wait on the midwife & gestate in peace for a bit. Drs. and hospitals will be there if you need them in the meantime. Good luck and I can't wait to hear about your birth!

Oh, I feel for you. I am also "attempting" an hbac (in August) and I find that the ideas that the OB's have for trial of labor are very different than those of mine and those of my midwives. Unfortunately, I think the OB's are just in the 'medical mind' concernig birth and don't truely trust a woman's body to do what it is made to do. I wish you well and am really glad that you see through the medical talk and can recognize the dangers that go with that model of care.

where do you guys live

we are in SE Virginia and it is the same way with the docs here. Probably half of our births are VBAC women.
ARGH!
1/200 VBACs have a uterine rupture but 1/200 will miscarry from an amnio...so why don't they stop amnios ????

Good choice!

Good for you with your decision. That OB did one thing for you that was positive...reassured you that HBAC is the best decision!

I agree with pp in waiting for your mw to get into town and not even go back to the doctor if he is not doing any good to you or your baby at this point (unless you have other medical issues/complications, of course).

All of you ladies have had wonderful words of wisdom and I am leaning towards homebirth for my first once I get pregnant. Now I see more than ever why doing homebirth (or at least attempting) for my first child will be the best decision, so as to hopefully prevent a c-section and VBAC for any future kiddos.

MMMM, I wish I could go without seeing him. However, I am at my 37 wk. mark. I JUST in the past couple of weeks was able to find a m/w that had experience enough with HBACs, that she is willing to take me on. Another reason I love m/ws. I haven't formally met with her yet. My doula is playing the middle man at the moment with getting us acquainted and set up. To answer the question previously asked, I to am in VA. Some consider it NOVA, but its more central... north of Richmond, south of Stafford area. There are NO dr's here that are willing to take a VABC, except for the one that I am currently with.. and now I see that is really a very "skewed" idea of "accepting" VBAC patients, didn't realize this until a few weeks back when he began talking about determining a date of delivery.. funny thing, I always thought the BABIES determined that. He isn't a bad Dr, just not what I am wanting this time .. and a little too eager with the cutting part In my area ALL mw's that are in a practice, or with the hospital WILL NOT do a VBAC, they won't even see you.. and my section was for failure to progress, due to circumstances, that could and SHOULD have been avoided, .. as with most!! : It was very difficult to find anyone, and I knew going into this that it would be hard, but I had no idea that it was going to mean a homebirth, something I have learned a lot on the past 9months. I am all about the reading/educating process of this thing Well, hope all you ladies out there wanting a VBAC can have that as a right that is available, and if you end up "having to do a HBAC" I hope you realize it is a wonderful choice too! I am certainly getting prepped! Once this girly decides to stop being POSTERIOR!!

My midwife recently mentioned the possibility of induction (I've had 2 sections), which really surprised me. I thought that was very dangerous. It confused me. Basically where we currently are is that she's been through a long hard labor we me and she's recommending that I go into labor naturally and then have an elective repeat c-section during labor. However, this past visit she mentioned that if I want to have a vbac, it may be possible if I try an induction a week or two early (my last baby was 2 weeks overdue). I don't know what to make of that, but it doesn't sound good to me. Threw me off. It sounds both dangerous, and not good for the baby to force it out before its ready. However she said, there's different opinions on vbac induction and c-sections can also be tricky for babies with the lung issues and such, and it would be healthier for me to have a vaginal birth. She was open to my opinion, but she thinks it is very unlikely I will have a vba2c at term. I'm so confused.

Wait, am I to understand you correctly, your not due until August, and your MW is already talking to you about an induction? That to me, although I am not a "medical professional" sounds a little aggressive. I understand that there are times that a c-section is necessary and I am thankful they exist for that reason... HOWEVER, they should not be the norm, or nearly as prevelant in our soceity as they are. Further more, I kinda don't understand why your mw would want to induce you EARLY, I can see if you were a few days past due, given previous birth experience. I obviously can't tell you what to do.. but let me say this, I had concerns with this OB from the early to mid. part of my first trimester. I felt that he was a little too eager to section/induce when it may not be necessary (based on prev. labour with him for my last baby) what I should have done, and what I did were very different. I stayed with him until I am so far along, that honestly the "baby jitters" that are normal to have at this point in the preg. are really causing me to have a lot of questions that I really wouldn't have had before, the added stress of not knowing what is going on until the last minute is something I wouldn't wish on anyone, and truthfully, you owe it to yourself, and your baby to make sure that someone that you believe has BOTH your best interests in mind is there with you when you are delivering. Just a side note, do a little research on your own, if you haven't, because the stats are pretty clear about the outcome of induction with past sections, and sections vs. vbacs. You are the one that has to live with the decision you make, not the mw, and really that means that if you feel a c-section is what you need/want, then get to the point where you know that is what is right for you, and don't look back. You have time to still think about what to do. Use it, and then find someone who will back you!

That's great that half your births are vbacs! Do you have a citation for the 1/200 rupture? I can't find those numbers. Thanks.

Wish I could convince a friend to giving her next birth a try for a vbac or at least read the research. I'm not judgmental on birth choices and I support her fully. She schedules her c/s for convenience reasons (to get in shape for a Hawaii trip and so she wouldn't be "too hot" during the summer) which is her right. But, she has expressed dissatisfaction with her births and both her babies had major breathing problems.

Good luck to everyone on your vbacs!

Ugh, I really hate OBs. I never realized how pushy and "take away a woman's rights" they were until I got pregnant with my son. Good for you for making the right choice for your baby and yourself! My OB recently couldn't believe that I hadn't gotten a c/s after a 32-hour labor, and that I refused an epidural! I am just glad I'm doing a homebirth, too.
