Sock construction question

Here's the background: I'm knitting a pair of socks for Dh in PF father's gray. I strayed from the pattern I've relied on for the past several months, thinking I'd internalized the basic construction. For some reason, I thought the heel was supposed to be a square, so when half the stitches--the heel part--turned out to be 3.75 inches wide, I went along making it 3.75 inches long. At some point it began to look really long, though, and when I checked the pattern, it recommended stopping at 2.75 inches.

So now I have a way long heel, which is turning into a very large circumference ankle accordingly. Does that make sense?

My question is, is this long heel/large ankle combo going to be uncomfortable? It's about two inches bigger around than the pattern calls for. Dh doesn't have big ankles.

Thoughts?

Hmm, well I do agree with you that typically the heel is square when I do it top down.... not sure how it'll feel! Have you had your DH do some sort of test fit to see how far off it really is? I've found that often knitted stuff (esp socks) appear MUCH larger than they really are. I guess I'd use that more as a guide, if it looks ok on the foot (even if not the foot it'll end up on!) then it'll probably be ok. But, I must also add that I hate frogging and would rationalize just about anything to avoid it

Good luck!
