I am wondering about info to make your own natural/organic mattresses. I imagine it might not be that difficult if you could make them like a futon style mattress. I also wonder about the cost, etc. I think this could be very doable though and possibly even use recycled materials to do so. Any thoughts?

Well 100 years ago or so, folks slept on a bed that had wire as the base (before that rope that was regularly tightened (hence, the expression sleep tight). Then they put a ticking (really big pillow) filled with fresh straw (replaced every year or so) on top of the springs. Probably not nearly as comfortable as contemporary mattresses. And then of course there were the bed bugs... However, it does seem as if some aspects of that mostly waste-free and sustainable sleep system ought to be applicable in the modern world. My grandmother had a bed that had the wires (were they some kind of spring?) as the bottom. She had a regular mattress on top but needed no box spring. It was bouncy and it squeaked but I remember it being fairly comfortable. A futon on that kind of bed might have been fine.

Hi, I used to have a bed like this one. it was the most comfortable bed i ever had. it was a open spring matress. Inplace of a box spring it was open metal springs (yes it was loud) and the matress on top was a heavy solid batting so it reall never wore out as there was nothing inside the matress to break down.
I made the mistake one time of putting a current day matress on top of the open springs and boy was it bouncy.
I really miss that bed! No pressure points, no springs poking through.
As far as making your own bed I don't know. But if you ever come accross a open spring matress bed I would suggest jumping on it!

if you do make a bed i would suggest doing several thin mattresses like japanese futons with different stuffing's that way you can air them easily and choose firmness by which filling is on top. you may want to read about traditional japanese futons
