Yesterday we drove over to our other house (which is undergoing renovation before we move) to show my ILs the progress. (It's the house where I grew up, so I know a lot of the neighbors but not all.) A family that lives down the street were out for a walk, and came over to say hello. It turns out that their son played soccer with ds#1 two years ago and so we all kind of remembered each other. We were standing around chatting, and they asked where ds goes to school. I told them we homeschool and the dad was asking if we are part of one of the (evangelical/religious) homeschooling umbrellas in our city. I told him we hs on our own ...
Anyways, ds#1 was telling him that he likes to jump off the 3 meter board at the high school pool backwards. And I don't know, but I *think* that if a 6 year old told me he liked to jump off a 3 meter board, no matter which was he was facing, I'd be quite impressed and ask him about his swimming/jumping/etc. But, instead, ds was asked, "So, how high is a 3 meter board?" Ds was like, "Um, 3 meters ... " and was quite perplexed by the question. The dad said, "Yes, how high is a 3 meter board?" (He has a first grader at home, so I'm pretty sure he knows that first graders don't necessarily study metric to standard measurement conversion, but I guess since we homeschool, maybe we are supposed to be following an advanced curriculum ... I don't know.
)
Anyway, ds looked at him and said, "It's 3 1-meter boards stacked on top of each other."
Fortunately, the dad seemed to like his answer and got a chuckle out of it. And in his defense, maybe he wasn't doing the typical "oh, you homeschool so let me quiz you and make sure you are learning" thing, but it sure felt like it. Ds just rolled with the punches, and at 6 1/2, seemed rather confused as to why he was being asked how high a 3 meter board was because, well, everyone should know that a 3 meter board was, well, 3 meters high.
But, I was very impressed with his answer and thought it was a crack up!
