Okay, I just realized that my son has been playing nearly every day in the dirt around a bunch of rail road ties that the former owner of our house put in our yard. He sits on them, leans on them, puts his hands on them, and digs in the dirt around them for hours.
I'm totally freaking out because although I knew that railroad ties weren't to be used as borders to sandboxes, I just didn't really understand how scary creosote is... These seem extremely old, by the way, with no odor and no stickiness or wetness. My guess would be they're at least five years old.
I want them taken out immediately, but then I heard you can't even dump them like normal logs because they're so toxic!! I'm FLIPPING out right now with worry. He's been in this house from age two to age three...
Is this something he should see a doctor about?
I mean, here I am feeding him organics, using safe toys, no BPA, breast feeding, he's intact, selectively vaxed, the safest car seat, cloth diapers. I've tried so hard to keep my babies safe from toxins (as much as possible, we do have to breathe this air after all, ha ha, we live in Southern California). And here I was letting him play around CREOSOTE! I told my husband, when he didn't seem to be taking me seriously, I said "Think of how hard we've been trying to get people to listen to us about BPA, vaccines, lead paint in toys, phthalates, etc and we've been using a product that the a government actually already recognizes is toxic?! I mean, how bad does it have to be to have mainstream America recognize this?!" kwim?
Ugh, I'm sick about this. What do I do? What's next??
Thanks for help and/or reassurance. I'm tossing and turning over it!
