I made a big batch several years ago for DD. I hand sewed most of them too. For bread I cut 4 squares of wheat colored felt & then cut a strip of felt teh width of the 4 pieces stacked. This was teh crust. You just "whip-stitch" around the edges to sew the crust to the bread. Using 4 pieces thick makes it thick enough. I would just browse & look at pictures & start trying to copy them. For round veggies I googled pattern for circle & found a template for my pattern pieces. For lettuce cut a couple of pieces of green felt the same shape & then stitch through all layers in "viens" to give it a little thickness to it. Just have fun! If there is any particular food you want to make post it, I'll write back if I know how. Have fun!!!

I make felt food and for starters I would highly recommend making templates/patterns out of paper to start with.

For making round shaped foods (like this cake I made), that will require sides (not flat like a cookie), the best way to do this is to trace a round object (like a mug) on paper - cut out. Then take a piece of yarn, and guide it around the border of the cut out circle, mark and cut the yarn - you know have the length you'll need to go around.

Then measure and/or lay the yarn out on a piece of paper to cut as the side piece - this should give you two matching pieces to work with now: circle for top and botton (cut 2), and a rectangle to be the side.

Pin to felt with straight pins, then cut and sew them up. I also recommend a site that will give visual tutorials of the basic stitches like "whip" and "blanket." There are a lot of helpful sites out there - just google the stitch names.

Once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are endless.

Hope this little bit of info helps you get started!

I would invest in 100 % wool felt, such a big difference! its a little more but so worth it I got mine from weirdolls.com
have fun, and just play around w/ the cheap felt first, and make your own patterns with poster board.
Blessings!
also flickr has alot of ideas there too.
