What can I do with old denim? - Page 2

martha stewart had a terriffic article about a year ago about making throw rugs from denim strips- not a braided rug, but the strips are sewn together in such a way that the white shaggy ends make a terrycloth like effect- really pretty cool.

On our local re-use it email network this week someone was requesting old denim for a project she was working on. I know a lot of people like to make throw-blankets with denim squares, since it is so strong and washable. Great picnic blankets! You might try offering them on freecycle or equivalent in your area and see if there is interest.

My mom used to make those! Some of the quilt squares had the rear pockets intact, which was so cute. Thanks for the reminder, now I want to make one too.

That sounds really interesting. I wonder if it's on her website.

I know there's a couple in Berkeley, and one on San Pablo, I've seen them.

I have several pairs in my sewing room for repurposing... I have the same wear pattern as you do. I figure I'll make a picnic quilt out of them. My grandmother has had one of those in her car for years now, she made it out of 6 inch squares of denim, backed it with some heavy flannel, and it's a really nice all-purpose throw blanket.

I would love to see your bags!

I make mine into quilts. I am currently working on a quilt for my son. I am also using some courdurouy from a skirt that I got bleach on!
Some of my sons old jeans that busted a hole through the knees I have turned into shorts. My husbands pants though I turn into squares.

I am thinking maybe next time I will make a jean skirt for myself from a pair of his old pants.

Apparently I'm just not very observant, as there's one right around the corner from me that I just noticed today. It's across the street from the new WF that just went in.

My mom and sister used to make bags too... I know a lot of people have already suggested bags... we also made menstrual bags with them... Bags that we held our pads and personal items in. So this bag would be smaller than your main bag, because it would go in your main bag.

Or, you could make a tiny bag with a strap to carry as a main bag.

My mom makes change purses too (bags to carry coins in).

Seat cushions and seat covers are fun in jean too (especially if it is a light weight jean).

Has anyone cut up old denim into cleaning rags? It seems like it would be nice and sturdy for scrubbing.

there are a lot of things.....
What I did with my scraps was I cut them up and made them into craft projects. I cut strips of denim and I wove them into a really cute rug..and it was wayyyy simple. You could always weave it for your carpet...lol

The pockets I am planning on making a cute hang up wall organizer for my crafts.

Make a jean skirt or shorts or a cute purse or even a hat...make a silly belt...the ideas are endless

you could save pieces for reinforments for holely jeans.

give it to a hamster....lol

or you could always toss it, I do not think it would hurt the environment much...it is primarily cotton.

I made a catnip bag for our cat. It works great and he loves it.

You could cut it into small strips and use them for waxing. They can be washed and used over and over again.
