ick acrylic

ick- although it is easily washable for my friends baby gifts- it is icko to knit with. just plain splitty and yucky to work with. I never thought that I was using especially lush yarns to begin with- pf or cascade- but what a difference.

That is all.

Time to invest in some superwash wool? Or even some of the cottons work nicely.

I just did a bunch of baby things out of organic cotton. Mmmmmmm.

Yeah, acrylic is cheap and easy to care for but its not really worth the time and effort (IMO) put in to knit with. The resulting item looks cheap.

I have lots of friends who wouldn't consider wearing anything BUT acrylic and then complain that they can get a similar item (not handknit) at a big box store for cheaper. I don't knit for them.

It seems to me that acrylic is more suited to crochet.

That's a cheap shot at crochet. : Do you even crochet??

It sucks working with acrylic. Period.

I've been online too long. Because. I was trying to figure out what the acronym "ICK" stood for. Sigh.

But yes, I hear ya, acrylic. bleh. love love love knit picks for yarn buying on a budget.

I knit and crochet and acrylic is yucky all around!!!! And the more you wash it and the older it gets the yuckier it gets. I finally found a LYS and am in love! So many options for natural fibers!

It's this kind of attitude that made me avoid other knitters for three years.

Sorry I wasn't actually trying to be offensive. I have a bunch of afgans made from acrylic and I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday about how easy it was to crochet with because SHE likes to crochet with it. I am not sure why what I said upset you.

Ladies- no hard feelings now.... it is so hard to get to a lys and I just needed a quickie gift- no time for even knitpicks. My mom crochets and she will only use acrylic- but my grandma knits and she only used acrylic. so who knows? But washable wool would be so much better than this- heck cream and sugar would be so much better! It turned out cute- I will have to post a pic later- just a 5 hour sweater with booties.

i am so in the minority - i don't mind it.

my grandmother-in-law buys it for me in huge trash bags at her goodwill store and i make it into blankets for charity - so it all goes to good causes.

plus, my most favorite blanket in the world was crocheted for me by my grandmother and it's rainbow acrylic

however, no way would i as an adult wear the stuff....but i don't mind it too much for baby items that are worn as layering pieces.

my mother bought me 30 balls of this 100% dk weight acrylic and everything i try to make with it feels like plastic it disgusts me what can i do with it- how do i get rid of it?

JMO, but I do think crochet tends to work a bit better with acrylic, since it makes a much looser kind of fabric. Just grab a big hook and start making blankets

I find that big, more slippery needles (like plastic or metal) don't do too bad with acrylic either.

I don't mind acrylic blends like wool-ease and encore but straight acrylic hurts my hands.

I've made market bags out of gifted acrylic.

If by acrylic you mean red heart super saver, yes, definitely ick. But there is SO much in the synthetic world outside of red heart super saver, and SUCH better quality! So, while I wouldn't want to knit with RHSS, I have knit with some LOVELY synthetics that are easy care- machine wash/tumble dry. Oh, and I don't mean encore or wool-ease either, cause I am not really a fan of either of those.

And at the same time, lots of people LOVE LOVE LOVE peace fleece, and I think I'd rather knit with/wear RHSS, lol. So, it's all in the eye of the beholder or rather, the stash of the knitter.

There is definitely some that are icky, I don't mind some though, for instance Caron Simply Soft doesn't bother me, locally I can pick it up for cheap, make a tank top or a sweater for a webkinz, and it's easy to care for, so it's all good here. All acrylic yarn is not equal, just like you can't compare BFL to Lion's Brand Fisherman's wool, just not the same.

I agree . . . I almost forgot . . . I had the pleasure of working with Caron Simply Soft to make http://www.flickr.com/photos/21438135@N07/2079174711/ and http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/a...t=100_1343.jpg. I would definitely use that again to knit or crochet.
